Why We Like This Place
The picturesque drive to your destination passes one well-kept horse farm after another before segueing to gentle hills planted with grapevines. This is “the other” wine trail in Temecula, less traveled and more tranquil than the main tourist route. It’s also home to one of the loveliest wineries and wedding venues in the whole valley—Leoness Cellars.
The name “Leoness” is a nod to the mythical village where King Arthur first spotted Guinevere and fell in love, although the owners add that in Scottish it means “village of dreams.” Clearly, this is their field of dreams. After decades of growing grapes for other vintners, the two partners decided to open their own winery in 2003. And as pristine as the surroundings may be, there exists a palpable connection, throughout your event, to the romance of the land, or “terroir” as it’s known in the wine world.
The first thing you notice when you arrive is the line of stately Italian cypress trees leading up to a European chateau-styled building which houses the very popular tasting room. Just a short distance from there is the serenely beautiful outdoor ceremony site. A rear wall, adorned with a lion’s head fountain, creates privacy and heightens the drama of your entrance. As you walk down the long center aisle, to the left are graceful Japanese plum trees interspersed with red and white roses. On the right are neat rows of cabernet plantings. Straight ahead stands the white wooden arbor where you’ll exchange vows, backed by a wide-angle vista of neatly tended vineyards and the Mt. Palomar Observatory perched on a distant mountaintop.
Celebratory cocktails are served on the Lower Lawn. Guests can toast the newlyweds at tables arranged on the grass, or mingle around the bar on the adjoining shaded patio, set right at the edge of the cabernet vines. As night falls, twinkle lights around the patio bring this spot to life. Afterwards, in a rare treat, you’ll all be invited into the vineyard itself for an unforgettable walk down a softly lit pastoral path. It’s the perfect way to get up close and personal with the versatile fruit that has engendered so much passion throughout the ages…and a great way to transition to dinner.
The freestanding Barrel Room, site for your reception, comes with a charming country patio that’s partly enclosed by the ivy-covered walls of the building and lit by old-fashioned lampposts. Inside, however, it’s all industrial chic with soaring ceilings, iron chandeliers, and oak barrels stacked up along every wall (this is, after all, part of the integral workings of the winery, as are the gleaming metal tanks around back, which make a unique photo backdrop).
This towering space has great acoustics and a polished concrete floor for dancing, yet it takes on an elegant intimacy as clusters of votive candles flicker against its dark brown walls. Soft leather club chairs are arranged in a corner for lounging, and there’s even a cozy niche where you might want to offer “wine flights” so guests can sample a broad range of Leoness varietals. For the perfect finale, cap off the evening with a glass of their sensual and earthy Cinsaut Port paired with a rich bittersweet truffle. It just might make you fall in love all over again.
