We'd love it if you would mention that you found Leoness Cellars on the Here Comes The Guide website.
Why We Like This Place
The picturesque drive to your destination passes one well-kept horse estate after another before segueing to gentle hills planted with grapevines. This is the De Portola Wine Trail, which is less traveled and more tranquil than the main tourist route. It’s also home to one of the loveliest wineries in the whole valley—Leoness Cellars, a venue with a spectacular view.
The name “Leoness” is a nod to the mythical village where King Arthur first spotted Lady Guinevere and fell in love. In Scottish it means “village of dreams,” which this place truly is.
The first thing you notice when you arrive is the line of stately Italian cypress trees leading up to a European chateau-styled building that houses the very popular tasting room. Just a short distance from here is the serenely beautiful outdoor ceremony site. Elevated above the vineyards, it’s set against a spectacular backdrop of the surrounding rolling hills and vineyards. A rear wall, adorned with a lion’s head fountain, creates privacy and heightens the drama of your entrance, as you walk down the long center aisle to the white wooden arbor where you’ll exchange vows.
Celebratory cocktails are served on the lower lawn. Guests can toast the newlyweds at tables arranged on the grass, or mingle around the bar on the adjoining shaded patio, set right at the edge of the Cabernet vines. As night falls, twinkle lights bordering the patio bring this spot to life. Afterwards, in a rare treat, you’ll all be invited into the vineyard itself for an unforgettable walk down a softly lit path. It’s an enjoyable way to experience the vineyards … and a great way to transition to dinner.
Receptions unfold in the Barrel Room, which comes with a charming patio that’s partly enclosed by the ivy-covered walls of the building and lit by old-fashioned lampposts. Inside, however, it’s all industrial chic with soaring ceilings, iron chandeliers, and oak barrels stacked up along every wall, providing an authentic winery-style wedding.
This towering space has excellent acoustics and a polished concrete floor for dancing, yet it takes on an elegant intimacy as clusters of votive candles flicker against its dark brown walls. Comfortable club chairs are arranged in a corner for lounging, and there’s even a cozy niche where you may offer guests a broad range of Leoness varietals. Award-winning wines and expertly prepared food will ensure an outstanding reception and, for the perfect finale, cap off the evening with a glass of their sensual and earthy Cinsaut Dessert Wine paired with a rich bittersweet truffle. It just might make you fall in love all over again.
