Lawry’s The Prime Rib

Why We Like This Place

Not far from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood you’ll find the other red carpet: one steeped in seven decades of Los Angeles history, rich British/American culinary tradition and Beverly Hills elegance. Lawry’s The Prime Rib combines the comforts of home—if you lived in an expansive English estate along the Thames—with a sumptuous dining experience executed flawlessly by professional servers who treat you like royalty. And if you’re worried that this venue’s famed Restaurant Row location or opulent English Edwardian décor puts it out of your league, don’t be—Lawry’s The Prime Rib provides classic sophistication with Old World prices.

Step inside the foyer and the contemporary world fades away into a timeless, softly lit realm of amenable luxury. Tasteful period furniture in the cocktail room and adjacent bar area complements wainscoted, jewel-toned walls. Antique chandeliers and sconces illuminate eye-catching polished silver pieces and gold-framed paintings of English nobles, dignitaries and countryside scenes. Despite its formal accoutrements, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed—perfect for guests mingling over hors d’oeuvres while awaiting your arrival.

Double doors open to reveal a step-down into the brilliant, emerald-colored Oak Room, a popular choice for smaller celebrations. Here, a bust of the Duke of Wellington and a bas-relief of William Shakespeare adorn the fireplace mantel, while the mixed-shade parquet flooring highlights a colorful coat of arms.

Larger ceremonies and receptions are held in the spacious main dining room, where a pair of majestic wooden lions evocative of regal courtyards presides over your grand entrance. An uplit, domed ceiling casts a subtle glow on the dark wooden columns and beveled glass, lending a festive nighttime ambiance at any hour. The sweetheart table is housed in the “garden,” a central space that features a sweeping hand-painted mural overhead. The adjacent Vintage Room, a private wine cellar, can be used as a bride’s room or for rehearsal dinners and post-reception family traditions, including tea ceremonies.

Lawry’s The Prime Rib’s reputation for great food has stood the test of time. One of the oldest single-family-owned restaurants in Los Angeles, it has served its signature British-style dinner of slow-roasted Midwestern prime beef, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding alongside flavorful gravy, horseradish, and its original seasoning salt since 1938. The almost-theatrical tableside service includes spinning salad prepared on a bed of ice and a carving of the roast from a 500-pound silver cart inspired by London’s famous Simpsons-in-the-Strand restaurant. The meal finishes with a selection of traditional British and American desserts, including an ice cream sundae made with C.C. Brown’s hot fudge sauce, a secret recipe bought by the Lawry family from Hollywood’s most legendary but now-defunct ice cream parlor.

From their family to yours, Lawry’s The Prime Rib serves up the most authentic Anglo-British (and award-winning) culinary experience this side of the pond, lending its cherished traditions to your celebration.
