Why We Like This Place
Okay, so you’ve read the word “Brewery” in the name and you’re ready to turn the page. Don’t do it!—you’ll miss one of San Diego’s surprise special event locations. This place may have a microbrewery somewhere on site, but we never saw it—we were too busy admiring the five and a half acres of beautiful Oriental gardens.
Who would have thought that in the midst of the ultra-modern San Diego Tech Center, with its gleaming glass highrises, you’d find such a lush oasis? It was quite a shock—albeit a delightful one—to step into this private world, literally hidden behind dense stands of bamboo and tall hedges. A restaurant with a two-tiered deck at both ends sits right at the edge of an emerald-green pond. Clusters of lily pads float on the still surface, while multicolored koi swim below. The entire site is ringed by a profusion of trees, bushes and grasses; an arched wooden bridge, stone lanterns perched on rocks and a cascading waterfall complete the picture.
The restaurant, designed like the one in Munich’s famous Chinese Pagoda Beer Garden, is filled with natural light from a wall of windows that wrap around three sides. Natural pine beams span the high peaked ceiling, and wooden planters overflowing with greenery bring the garden inside. While most receptions or parties are held in here, ceremonies usually take place on the largest deck. The bride and groom say their vows at the end of the deck, with the gardens as a backdrop. Both decks—shaded by plenty of green umbrellas and an occasional tree growing up through the flooring—are also just as popular for outdoor celebrations. A white canopy protects the lower tier of the main deck, and heaters can be turned on if the temperature drops a bit.
Noisy signs of civilization? You won’t find any of them at Karl Strauss’ Gardens. Peace and tranquility reign here, so you might as well just sit down, sip something cool, and watch the koi gently ripple the still surface of the pond.
