Why We Like This Place
The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina is almost a city unto itself and, like most fabulous cities, seems to have something for everyone—especially when it comes to weddings. This sprawling resort, surrounded on three sides by water, encompasses such a variety of event spaces, from grand ballrooms to an exotic woodsy sanctuary to a sunny seaside embankment, that virtually any bride’s desires can be satisfied.
Start with the very private Banyan Lawn and Court, a landscaped park featuring a cluster of spreading banyan trees in the center of a courtyard, ringed by flowering shrubs and peek-a-boo water views. Banyans, which symbolize “wish fulfillment” and “eternal life” throughout India and Southeast Asia, make a fitting backdrop for exchanging vows and celebrating a union! There’s plenty of room on the expansive adjacent lawn for cocktails and dinner, followed by dancing under the trees. Wedding album alert: You must take photos on the wooden bridge that straddles the grove.
If you prefer a ceremony site with the sun sparkling on the water, tie the knot on the Bayside Lawn where the Mission Bay Bridge arcs in the background. From here, it’s a short walk to the Bayview Ballroom. Grand in scale, the room boasts dramatic chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows framing a wide vista that transitions from a colorful sunset at dusk to twinkling lights across Mission Bay at night. An adjoining patio (also available with the Mission and Palm Ballrooms) creates an indoor/outdoor flow, but the Hyatt has another option that truly elevates the indoor/outdoor experience to a totally upscale and glamorous level.
The Regatta Pavilion will make you forget anything you ever thought you knew about tented venues. Lushly draped, fully carpeted and adorned with Italian crystal chandeliers, the pavilion is a unique, romantic setting where up to 700 guests can revel beside the bay.
Planning a smaller-scale gathering? There are plenty of choices for you, too. The Cabanas is an intriguing spot for an event-in-the-round. This circular, grassy area is separated from the hotel entry by lush, tropical plantings and a white canvas sail billowing between two tall palm trees. A series of raised, open-air cabanas around the perimeter provide seating during the ceremony, or conversation-friendly groupings during the reception. For an intimate fête with a sophisticated feel, take the elevator straight to the Penthouse atop The Tower. This sleek apartment with marble floors, step-down living room, fireplace, bar and wraparound patios with near 360-degree panoramas of the bay, ocean and marina is, to quote Cole Porter, “the tops.”
The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is a great destination for your out-of-town guests: They’ll dine splendidly (the catering staff uses the freshest ingredients in deliciously innovative ways); they can be pampered at the spa; there’s a water playground on site; and the hotel is close to a wide range of attractions. And for you, the newlyweds, the perks don’t end with the wedding—in addition to receiving a complimentary bridal suite, you actually earn reward points from your event that entitle you to free nights at any Hyatt worldwide for your honeymoon!
