Why We Like This Place
The first grand hotel to grace Laguna Beach and the getaway of choice for ultra-cool stars such as Errol Flynn, John Barrymore, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, iconic Hotel Laguna is rightly viewed with reverence by locals and visitors alike. Situated right in the heart of Downtown Laguna Beach, this landmark building’s delightful blend of Old World charm and California casual style has been pleasing guests for decades…and it’s still an oceanfront favorite.
The small private beach at the foot of the property is perhaps the most popular spot in the area for an outdoor wedding ceremony. Couples can get married here with the ocean quite literally at their feet and the surf tumbling in a few yards away. Larger seated outdoor ceremonies are held in the hotel’s lovely Rose Garden, with its Victorian gazebo and Spanish-tile fountain. Surrounded by climbing bougainvillea, colorful hibiscus, and—of course—roses, it’s a great place to stage anything from a cocktail reception to a rocking dance party.
But for a party that’s practically on the beach, there’s no place like the Laguna Room. Recently outfitted with fresh white curtains and champagne-colored carpeting, it has a built-in dance floor, oak-and-granite bar, private restrooms and a small foyer/lounge. Its ceiling slopes down to sliding glass windows that frame an expansive ocean view and open onto the Laguna Room Terrace, situated right over the beach. Revelers can dance here, indoors or out, with ocean breezes to keep them naturally cool, and the acoustics inside are reportedly excellent.
But these aren’t the only options for entertaining in this vibrant and widely adored venue. Serve up cocktails or bites in the Catalina Room, where a highly polished granite fireplace set on a wide granite platform with built-in granite benches is large enough to act as a small stage. Windows and doors provide access to the Terrace, the OceanView Bar, outdoor walkways and panoramic Pacific views. Party of ten? How about sipping in Claes’ Wine Cellar, where the rich merlot-colored carpet, handcrafted floor-to-ceiling mahogany wine cabinets, and cherrywood chef’s table create a subtly glamorous dining ambiance. The smoked glass vitrine full of the owner’s food and wine competition medals speaks to this venue’s award-winning culinary expertise. Or gather your small group of guests for a private rehearsal dinner or extra-intimate reception in the handsomely appointed San Clemente Room. Located next to CLAES Ovation, the newest incarnation of the Hotel Laguna’s much-acclaimed restaurant, this cozy event space shares décor elements and gorgeous views with its illustrious neighbor—which, incidentally, can be bought out for private functions.
When the celebration is over, don’t make the mistake of leaving right away. The artsy community of Laguna Beach has so much to offer, and this is the perfect home away from home from which to enjoy it. Snag the Bogart or Errol Flynn suite, book an après-party massage in a beachside cabana, and ease into a little vacation fun on California’s own Riviera.
