Why We Like This Place
The vision for the Hollywood United Methodist Church as “a sanctuary of hope” began back in 1909, when the first congregants started to organize. Though challenged by a series of setbacks in the ensuing decades, their faith and perseverance was finally rewarded in 1930, when the majestic building was unveiled to enthusiastic acclaim, launching its distinguished reign as a Hollywood landmark. Film stars of the ‘30s significantly boosted the early church’s membership, and it became a rousing success. Today, the Hollywood United Methodist’s welcoming, inclusive philosophy continues to make it a vital force in the community. Besides renting rooms for film auditions and conferences, the church has served as a location for feature films such as That Thing You Do and Sister Act. Best of all, this historic church is available for weddings and other festive functions—all at an affordable price.
The church’s architecture is Gothic Revival, a style developed during the Middle Ages to fill worshippers with reverence for the spiritual realm. Modern visitors can’t help but be similarly inspired, especially in the dramatic Main Sanctuary. The cathedral-type ceiling, modeled after the one in London’s Westminster Hall, features open beams decorated with images of cherubs. Contributing to the breathtaking ambiance is a wealth of stained-glass windows: As the ever-present Southern California sunshine streams through these spectacular works of art, the sanctuary is aglow in a subtle wash of rainbow hues. At the back of the church a balcony slopes down from a glorious window depicting Christ blessing the city; he seems to be including all visitors in the benediction. Luminous chandeliers, an intricately carved wooden altar, and cloistered side aisles enhance the warmth and dignity of this beautiful space.
Brides make their promenade down a long center aisle that passes between pews seating up to 500 guests. There’s room for another 200 in the balcony. A pipe organ and a grand piano are available for the wedding music, and you can also bring in a harpist, classical guitarist or other accompanist. For a novel musical experience, arrange for the Martindale Memorial Carillon atop the soaring church tower to chime a stirring melody at the conclusion of your ceremony. With 32 tubular bells ranging from the key of C to G, it is the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi.
Smaller weddings often prefer the intimacy of Betts Chapel off the Main Sanctuary. Its noteworthy ceiling displays beams intricately carved with Gothic cloverleaf designs. Muted Moorish-style stencils complement the intriguing pre-Deco light fixtures. As befits the Chapel’s more simplified décor, the arched leaded windows are less flamboyant than those in the Sanctuary. The richly carved altar focuses the audience’s attention on the wedding rituals.
When you have a wedding at the Hollywood United Methodist Church, you don’t just get married—you become part of a Hollywood tradition!
