Who would ever guess that behind the Happy Trails Catering Company’s narrow storefront is one of the best-kept event location secrets in Pasadena? Well, we certainly didn’t, and were pleasantly surprised when we left the sun-soaked main street and walked down a short driveway into the cool shade of an expansive, parklike courtyard.
Here you’ll find soft grass underfoot, high ivy-covered walls, palm trees, bamboo stands and a formidable, century-old camphor tree that rises from the garden’s center like an enormous protective umbrella. As you approach the tree you can’t help but notice the boards and pipes embedded in its trunk. They’re left over from a plumber’s shop that occupied this spot a hundred years ago. Apparently the tree had grown right through the wall and roof of the shop, and when it was pulled down, the parts of the building that had been absorbed into the living flesh of the tree simply remained for posterity.
An elevated wooden deck has been built around the trunk of the tree, and some couples exchange vows here; others prefer to get married in front of a tall stand of bamboo against the back wall of the courtyard. Tables are set up on the grass for the reception, their white linens and colorful centerpieces contrasting beautifully with the green surroundings. Soft night lighting is provided by Craftsman-style lanterns hanging from the tree, and you can dance beneath them on the deck or on the patio next to the quaint brick building that houses the catering kitchen.
Happy Trails Catering is dedicated to fresh, exciting food. When they customize your menu they pull out all the stops: They’ll incorporate family recipes, take the garlic (or other seasonings) out of dishes if you request it, or whip up a completely vegetarian meal if that’s what you want. And being a full-service caterer, they’ll coordinate all the details so that you’ll have very little to do.
CEREMONY CAPACITY: The location holds up to 200 seated guests.
EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The garden holds 200 seated guests.
MEETING CAPACITY: The brick patio holds 50 seated theater-style, the lawn area holds 200 seated in a circular theater-style configuration, and the raised deck accommodates 30 with additional bench seating around the edge.
To reserve your date for a wedding, 50% of the event total and a completed contract are required; the final balance is due the day of the event. The rental fee is $3,500 for the entire day. Catering, which is provided, runs $100–150/person and includes a full menu, staff, most rentals (e.g. tables, chairs, linens, china, etc.), and gratuity.
