Why We Like This Place
The exclusive community of Coto de Caza has always been a secluded universe unto itself—a peaceful microcosm set securely behind a stone entry, and laced with hiking and horseback riding trails. At the pinnacle of its 4,000 verdant acres, capped by a tower that’s visible from almost anywhere inside Coto’s wrought-iron gates, is a chic world within a world: the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club, one of only three private 36-hole country clubs in metropolitan Southern California.
With Craftsman-style architecture that reflects a Frank Lloyd Wright penchant for 90-degree turns and angles, the club’s 44,000-square-foot clubhouse is a theatrical venue for tying the knot. At its entrance a graceful bridge stretches over a pond fed by trickling streams and cascading waterfalls that create a Zen-like calm. After walking up the wide staircase fronting its expansive stone and glass façade, guests step into a lobby filled with rich woods, Mission-style furnishings and light streaming in through floor-to-ceiling windows. While they chat and sip lemonade, you’ll relax and prepare for the day’s festivities in the Ladies Lounge, outfitted with a large closet, TV and cushy sofas.
When your ceremony is about to begin, friends and family will take their seats on the lower outdoor patio, near the flower-ringed half circle looking out over the club’s velvety fairways. As strains of “Here Comes the Bride” begin, they’ll turn and see you appear at the apex of the club’s dramatic stairway, ready to descend the long aisle to meet your groom. With the rolling hills of the Trabuco Canyon as a backdrop, you’ll exchange your vows.
Reception options abound here. For larger gatherings the outdoor pavilion, Paralso, overlooks the greens and comes alive in the evening, with twinkling lights on lacy trees surrounding the adjacent rock waterfall. Count on comfort in all seasons, as the expansive space is equipped with ceiling fans, heat lamps and roll-down sides for wind protection. The club’s Serra Bela Room and attached outdoor terrace, with views of the golf course and canyon, is a more intimate setting for post-ceremony cocktails and dinner. Another alternative is the homey A Nosen Room, with its built-in bar, interior fireplace and outdoor fire pit on the adjoining patio.
No matter where in the facility you choose to celebrate, your coordinator at the club can arrange for many special touches. Opt for a chocolate-dipped strawberry bar with an attendant to infuse the plump fruits with guests’ choice of liqueur; have your new initials scrolled in chocolate on your cake plate; or heat up the party with a flambé dessert station. If you can’t make it to the tropics for a honeymoon escape, create your own singular world at the club: Follow the example of one bride who brought the spirit of Aloha to the mainland by importing tiki torches, leis and flowers from the islands for a colorful luau, Coto-style. This private country club is sure to fulfill your wedding dreams and impress your guests.
