Why We Like This Place

Chester Washington Golf Club offers some things most big L.A. hotels don’t have: a beautiful outdoor ceremony site, a banquet room with lots of natural light and verdant views, great rates and ample free parking.

Ceremonies take place on the course itself, against a backdrop of rolling green hills and mature trees. Afterwards, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are served on the Clubhouse patio, just off the bar/lounge. The lounge, painted in fresh shades of lemon and cela-don, is a far cry from the stuffy, dark bars you find at some golf clubs. There’s an oak beadboard bar and tall, floor-to-ceiling win-dows inset with sliding doors that open to the patio, permitting your event to flow seamlessly indoors and out.

You also have exclusive use of the foyer when you celebrate here. This space connects to both the bar and the banquet room, so in addition to being a handy location for place card and gift tables, it can host your cocktail reception if the weather doesn’t coop-erate.

Now, on to the banquet room. The recent remodel exploits the room’s natural assets: a high ceiling and tall windows on three sides, all of which create a light and airy ambiance. On one side, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors form a long curved wall overlooking manicured lawns, lofty eucalyptus trees and pines. Cream-colored walls, amber wood wainscoting, chan-deliers with diminutive silk shades and a built-in parquet dance floor make the space even more inviting. Since nothing about the décor is heavy handed, you can dress it up any way you want. But with its clean, crisp look, this room is handsome enough that you don’t need to be a set designer to make it look good.

In addition to its appealing event spaces, the golf club has a surprisingly rich history. Back in 1928 when the course was first built, this part of L.A. was just fields of corn and beans. Who knew that years later this facility would become one of the most important courses available to African-American golfers in the United States. Not only did a number of the great African-American golf play-ers of the era make this course their home base, other famous African-Americans could be found swinging their clubs here too, like heavyweight champion Joe Louis and baseball great Jackie Robinson.

In 1982, the club was renamed to honor one of the course’s habitués: award-winning African- American journalist Chester Wash-ington. Today the players at Chester Washington Golf Club are as ethnically diverse as the surrounding neighborhoods.

Golf lovers and history buffs may feel a special connection to this place, but you don’t have to be either to appreciate Chester Washington Golf Club. Everyone can feel comfortable at this lovely spot, which scores high in our book.

Fees & Deposits

A nonrefundable deposit, which is applied to your food and beverage total, is required to reserve your date. The amount of the deposit is equal to 25% of the estimated event total. 50% is due 6 months prior, and 100% of the final estimated balance is due 10 days prior to the event date. Food and beverage minimums range $2,000–4,000. Meals range $25–40/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
