Why We Like This Place
It may seem like a contradiction to say that the Center at Cathedral Plaza is both soothing and energizing, but somehow this dynamic addition to L.A.‘s downtown district pulls it off. Completed in 2002, the new seat of the Los Angeles Archdiocese skillfully integrates sweeping open space, soaring modern architecture, and tucked-away pocket areas to create a center of calm in the middle of this vibrant urban landscape.
Eschewing traditional architecture, the distinctive Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral and its 15-story campanile makes a bold statement, rising from the 5.6-acre site above the Hollywood Freeway. It’s the largest Catholic church in the country—surpassing St. Patrick’s in New York by one foot—and Spanish architect José Rafael Moneo has truly achieved his goal of conveying a sense of journey and light. Complemented in his efforts by internationally known artists such as Lita Albuquerque, Robert Graham and John Nava (whose best works play such an integral role at various Los Angeles cultural sites), the cathedral is an inspiring location for a religious ceremony. The 11-story structure, which has no right angles inside, is flooded with light thanks to translucent alabaster windows and chandeliers shaped like bells. Each side of the main sanctuary is adorned with a fresco-style mural of saints from the four corners of the world, and the long center aisle down the limestone floor makes for a dramatic bridal march to the altar with its 85-foot organ. But you don’t have to be Catholic—or even Christian—to take advantage of the bountiful options at the Center for your reception.
The Ballroom at the Plaza’s two-story Conference Center makes a sophisticated venue, with its gold leaf chandeliers, burnished gold-hued walls and pale wood accents. Guests sipping cocktails in the L-shaped Viewing Foyer enjoy the vista through large windows that overlook the Plaza.
The Plaza itself, designed to welcome visitors to rest, reflect and enjoy civic events, plays frequent host to spectacular open-air galas, charity events and weddings. The first thing that greets you as you enter this grand outdoor space is the Gateway Fountain and Water Wall, a huge white marble disk chiseled with a life-affirming homily translated into dozens of languages. Above you, an archway hung with a series of melodious golden bells separates you from the bustle of downtown. And the main steps, directly ahead, draw you towards the expansive Upper Plaza, where as many as 4,000 guests can be fêted among groves of palm and olive trees that rustle in the afternoon breeze.
If you’re looking for a more intimate setting for a smaller party or rehearsal dinner, there are numerous possibilities: the natural stone Jerusalem Fountain; the Children’s Garden with its playful bronze animal sculptures; the shaded Colonnade with its glass walls etched with angels; or even a sandy oasis at the Native American garden, fringed with towering palms and an interpretative sculpture of a woman rising from the waves. No matter which area(s) you choose, Levy’s Restaurants, the resident caterer and event planner, will help you create your own corner of heaven.
