Why We Like This Place
During the Roaring Twenties, Santa Monica was the heart of California’s Gold Coast, the chic stretch of beach that became the personal playground of L.A.‘s elite. Of the many lavish beach clubs that were built during this era, Club Casa Del Mar was the uncontested Grande Dame. The building’s Renaissance Revival architecture fed designers’ imaginations. Hand-painted ceilings, bronze statuary, and the poshest of furnishings gave the club an unrivaled elegance. The lively social scene, led by Hollywood celebrities and business magnates, tempted everyone who was anyone to take part in the excitement.
Casa del Mar survived the Depression, but World War II finally closed this stylish landmark. Now, a dedicated team of hotel developers has restored the Grande Dame to her former magnificence. This lavish restoration evokes the glamour and creative spirit of the hotel’s glory days, while incorporating modern amenities that the discriminating guest has come to expect from a premier facility.
First, notice the brick-and-sandstone façade, decorative sculpted accents and the Mediterranean flair of a red-tile roof and iron balconies. The beautiful hotel is separated from the sand by palm trees and a promenade, but you enter streetside through an exquisite two-story door made of ornate stained glass. The foyer is a grand rotunda dominated by a wrought-iron chandelier and twin sweeping staircases inlaid with mosaic tiles. As you make your way up to the lobby, you hear the faint strains of a ragtime piano from a distant past as you’re caught up in the magical ambiance. Your eyes take in the gorgeous rugs, intriguing Art Nouveau-inspired lighting fixtures and gold-inlaid ceilings before resting on the scintillating seascape visible through the tall windows lining the far wall. Design details throughout are an artful mix of the casual and the refined, ranging from Miami-style furnishings in the seaside restaurant to plush chairs and velvet sofas in the lobby living room. Warm fruitwood paneling and the soothing tones of peach, marine blue, and sage predominate. Comfort, a top priority here, is easy to come by: Enjoy a cocktail while lounging on the oceanside veranda, unwind in the full-service spa, or curl up by one of the many fireplaces.
If you’ve come for a celebration, let the good times roll in the Casa’s stunning ballroom, the Colonnade. Two-tiered Venetian glass chandeliers suspended from the sculpted ceiling gently illuminate the pale walls. It’s almost a shame to cover the sumptuous plum carpeting with a dance floor. Silk draperies in celadon and gold frame a wall of windows that reveal breathtaking Pacific sunsets. Open the French doors, step out onto the loggia, and let a refreshing ocean breeze caress your cheek. The Colonnade can easily be divided into smaller sections to suit the size of your event, and several other well-appointed spaces are available for intimate dinners, business meetings, or conferences.
The entire restoration blends quality craftsmanship with nostalgic elegance. For a special event as original as the setting, experience the romance of Hotel Casa Del Mar.
