Why We Like This Place
Santa Barbara, one of the most beautiful towns in the world, welcomes a gorgeous new venue: Canary Hotel, an upscale boutique hostelry that reigns from the historic city center, between the sparkling-blue Pacific and the tree-studded Santa Ynez foothills. This strategic location puts you steps from what the New York Times dubbed “shopping Nirvana,” as well as theaters, galleries, and the exciting nightlife of State Street. Like the balmy tropical islands the Canary is named after, Santa Barbara boasts miles of sun-kissed beaches, as well as an artistic spirit and a convivial, laid-back attitude—qualities that are embodied by this very sophisticated hotel.
Canopied walkways lead inside this urban oasis, where lush native plantings blend with the indigenous sounds of exotic birds, tree frogs, lizards and crickets from the Canary Islands. This sultry ambiance is also reflected in the décor. Exotic North African textures combine with luxurious Spanish-Colonial style for a fashionably fun, yet plush, interior. Wainscoted walls, hand-carved woods and wrought-iron details complement carpets, upholstery and tile in rich shades evocative of fine Madeira. The hotel’s restaurant and bar, Coast, is a popular Santa Barbara gathering spot. There’s a lovely private dining room for rehearsal dinners, and all your event dining is catered by the accomplished culinary team, who specialize in New American cuisine paired with wonderful wines from around the world.
The hotel’s most unique event locale is found atop its five stories: an exclusive rooftop pool and terrace. Already it’s “a scene” for Hollywood types and celebs drawn to the phenomenal 360-degree view, which encompasses the red-tiled roofs of the “American Riviera” and spectacular sunsets over the ocean. The terrace is also attracting couples with weddings on their minds. Wicker resort furniture outfitted with comfy cushions and a Mission-style hearth transform the area into a spacious outdoor room. A profusion of greenery and terracotta pots brimming with flowers create a pretty garden milieu for ceremonies and open-air gatherings. A short staircase inlaid with Spanish tiles holds court between the terrace and the pool, making it a natural focal point for tying the knot. A pair of pergolas flanks the upper landing, where the cocktail hour flourishes around a swimming pool that mirrors the blue of the Pacific beyond.
Formal soirées take place in one of five banquet rooms that surround an elegant foyer on the hotel’s lower level. They all have a warm, inviting character, including the largest venue, the Riviera Ballroom.
Your “after-party for two” unfolds in your cozy, yet refined, guest suite. With a CD of Spanish guitar music playing and ultra-soft robes to slip into, you’ll feel as if you’re indulging in a romantic Mediterranean honeymoon. While your friends and family hop the beach shuttle or hit the gym next door, you order in-room spa treatments or snuggle between deluxe linens. Go ahead and extend your siesta as long as you want—after all, in this delightful haven, room service is available 24 hours a day!
