Why We Like This Place

This is the granddaddy of Temecula Valley’s wineries, established in 1969 by a sports equipment executive looking to try some-thing new. Besides all of the award-winning wines Callaway has produced through the decades, it’s also known for its years of experience hosting weddings and receptions, and its hilltop view—probably one of the best in the whole of Temecula Valley. The San Bernardino, San Gorgonio and Palomar mountain ranges come into sight, as well as the rocky masses of the nearby coastal mountains. The prime outdoor ceremony site, a long pine- and flower-edged lawn, takes in this distant panorama, while a feisty little vineyard, clinging tenaciously to a nearby hillside, provides a closer-in wine country backdrop.

Callaway’s most popular reception space is the Barrel Room, the biggest of its kind in the valley. (Brides like the room so much that some of them even elect to hold their ceremonies in it.) It’s large and cool, with high ceilings and hundreds of barrels of fer-menting wine along the walls. Depending on your needs, the barrels can be moved around to create intimate areas or ballroom-sized expanses. Ten great chandeliers brighten the room, and 15-foot-high glass doors lead to the adjacent steel fermentation bar-rel room where white wines undergo their final development. Bridal parties often enter from the outside through this room to the Barrel Room, passing between gleaming 3,000-gallon stainless steel tanks.

On another side of the Barrel Room is the Chardonnay Room, a cozy smaller-scale wedding, reception or rehearsal dinner venue. An additional option for events is the two-tiered terrace beside the winery’s Meritage Restaurant; the upper level is often used for cocktail receptions and the lower for dinners. (Some couples also hold their ceremony here.)

Callaway does all catering in-house. The staff is happy to customize menus, which run the gamut from fresh and simple to gour-met. A staff event coordinator attends to all wedding details, taking you every step of the way, from menu planning and timelines to selecting vendors and decorating the facility.

Evening ceremonies, which are best at Callaway, seem to be the custom up and down the valley. The reason is Temecula’s reliable cool evening breeze, a great finish to the valley’s often-warm days. And then there are also the almost-always spectacular sunsets that locals anticipate and have bragged about for decades.

Brides who love this place all mention the same things that drew them to it: Callaway’s relaxed, rustic, country feel; the geography of the surrounding valley and mountains; and the dramatic outdoor setting that is light years away from a hotel banquet room.
