Questions and Answers
What 3 words describe your work? Engaging, passionate, timeless.
Why should someone hire you? Photography can be so stressful for some couples—it is super important to them, and they need to find someone they can like and trust with it. I've been that person for so many couples over the years, so I understand all those concerns. My couples end up having fun with the shoot; I get great shots and manage to stay out of the way so they can enjoy their family and guests on that special day.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started? After completing my BFA from Art Center in Pasadena, I began my photography career doing photojournalism, architectural interiors and advertising. But I found my passion 20 years ago when I shot my first wedding, and I'm just as passionate about it today.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? I am inspired by classical and modern art—the use of line and form to create composition, and the direction of light. I also love to study human nature.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or most interesting moment at a wedding: The first dance is always my favorite part. Everyone attending is transfixed as the bride and groom create a timeless memory for everyone attending. There are many magical moments at a wedding but this is one of my favorites.
What makes a wedding memorable for you? I try to get at least one shot where I portray someone as they've never seen themselves, usually in an amazing setting with great light. There are many memorable shots from a wedding, but those are the most satisfying for me.
What have weddings taught you? That there is a tremendous diversity in people and the way they plan weddings, yet those feelings of sharing your life with another person are universal.
What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding? Get the best possible vendors you can afford, and strongly consider hiring a wedding planner—they will know what to do, they will keep the day organized, and you'll get to enjoy yourself!
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be? Invisibility.
What are 3 words that describe your personality? Loyal, fun loving, easy-going.
What is your favorite quote? "The camera is an instrument that teaches people to see without a camera." —Dorothea Lange
What's your favorite marriage advice? Practice the Fine Art of Listening.
Extracurricular activities: I love exercise, travel, reading and good companionship.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead? Spending time in Italy becoming a professional student of history, art, and culinary expertise. Oh, and I'd become a professional traveler.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? It's a hard choice between Thai food and ice cream. Though rarely together. I enjoy body surfing and dancing and jazz clubs to relax too.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges? The Five Crowns restaurant in Corona Del Mar, CA has a new pocket café called the Side Door. They make the most amazing cauliflower in brown butter with truffles.
About This Company
Anyone who can hold a camera can call themselves a photographer, but few are really good at taking pictures, and fewer still are great. Lawrence Crandall is a great photographer. Just look at his work: His photos speak for themselves.
“There’s something special about getting behind a camera,” Lawrence explains. “My perspective shifts…it’s as if what I’m seeing transcends time. Wedding stories are so universal and I love telling them. “Sometimes people don’t know how beautiful they are, and it’s uplifting to see them seeing their own beauty.”
A graduate of Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, Lawrence has a degree in Commercial Photography and actually began his career in the advertising and commercial worlds before deciding to focus his considerable talents on weddings. And among the wide-ranging body of images he’s created over the years, his wedding photographs are the most engaging. That’s probably why his work has been published in the country’s top bridal magazines and why he’s won over 30 national awards. It’s also one of the reasons brides and grooms hire him. “Larry has a real knack for finding beautiful shots,” says one bride. “He achieved a great balance between family and wedding party portraits and more spontaneous, candid moments. I was thrilled with the number, quality and content of our photos. Without a doubt, I would recommend him to anyone!”
“He’s one of the most confident, capable photographers I have had the pleasure to work with,” adds an industry colleague. “Larry has a great understanding of classic photography, posing and composition. I think that makes him stand out.”
Other reasons he stands out are his experience and the ease with which he and his team handle even the most stressful situations. His extraordinary technical expertise gives him flexibility and speed, both of which are important when you’re chasing those fleeting, magical moments. “He put me and my husband at ease,” recollects one newlywed, “which wasn’t easy given that I was nervous on my big day and I’m definitely camera shy! Larry’s team acted in the exact manner that I had wanted—relaxed and professional.”
“We chose Larry because of his professionalism, flexibility, his ability to listen, and his desire to work with us,” says another client. “We had a lot of ‘wows’ when we looked at our pictures.”
“Couples need to enjoy their wedding day,” explains Larry. “It’s my job to find the story, to make it look natural, to frame it well. I get my best shots really fast, and I’m always looking for at least one image that’s iconic, a photo that is so special that the couple has never seen themselves in that light before.”
