Why We Like Them

One of the best ways to make sure your individual beauty shines as you walk down the aisle is with a custom wedding dress designed by Beate Couture. From her intimate Hancock Park atelier,  Beate von Kessler embraces the spirit of authentic couture, crafting unique bridal looks exactly suited to each of her client’s shape and style.

Raised in New York City and Europe, Beate studied the arts at Vassar, L’Ecole des Beaux Art and Atelier Julian. Her involvement with costume restoration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute furthered her knowledge of classic garment construction. A move to L.A. in 1989 launched Beate’s couture career, and since then her gowns have graced Hollywood red carpets, debutante balls, and of course, weddings. Beyond radiant brides, Beate also designs for flower girls, bridesmaids and Mothers of the Bride and Groom who want to look just right for such a special occasion.

In times past, working with a designer of Beate’s taste and skill was a costly enterprise. Not anymore! Custom wedding dresses from Beate can range from $1,500 for a simple beach wedding dress, to $10,000 and up for an elaborately embellished ball gown; but the average bride spends around $2,500. One of Beate’s brides revealed to us that she almost bought a bridal gown off the rack, and then realized: “If you’re going to spend thousands on your dress, make it your dress.”

Beate’s gowns are known for their quality materials, exquisite fit and timeless sophistication. A top photographer described Beate’s fashion aesthetic as “elegant, refined, and feminine.” Another professional complimented Beate’s “true designer’s eye.” (So why not have her style your entire look, including your veil and headpiece?) The brides we spoke with praised Beate’s sensitivity and warm personality. They appreciated that she stayed within their budgets, didn’t rush or pressure them, and worked with them one-on-one throughout the entire process to create their perfect wedding dresses.
