About This Company
With their polished riffs and wide range of musical skills, the Rick Whitfield Band puts thoughts of typical wedding singers quickly to rest. Led by seasoned rock and roller Rick Whitfield, the band includes a rotating cast of “session” musicians who play special events when they’re not on tour with Eric Clapton, Wyclef Jean, Billy Joel or Elton John. These guys are passionate about what they do, and consistently create world-class music wherever they perform.
When Rick assembles one of his high-caliber groups for an event, he seeks out guitarists, keyboardists, and drummers who have the skills to produce a specific musical vibe. He tailors his sets to fit the crowd of each event; R&B, Sinatra, classical, jazz, calypso, mariachi and reggae all come easily to him and his band-mates. At a recent wedding for a couple in their 20s, Rick hired a female singer, a horn section, guitar, bass, and keyboards to deliver a jazz set-list. “Rick’s great with the audience and extremely versatile,” says an event planner. “In the past month, I hired him for an 80-year-old man’s birthday and he did oompah-pah music. Then I used him for a grad student’s party with standard rock and Top 40. Both clients loved him.”
Having worked in the biz for more than 20 years, Rick is the consummate composer and session musician. He wrote numerous movie theme songs as well as scores for the television shows Melrose Place and Party of Five—not to mention playing Oprah Winfrey’s 2006 New Year’s party. Frank Sinatra, Eric Gale and The Beatles may be his favorite virtuosos, but he takes pride in staying on top of current trends: he sings Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes with as much grace as “In the Still of the Night.”
“Rick and his band were able to do any hit that was requested,” says one satisfied bride. “A lot of our guests are in bands and know music so it was hard to decide who to hire. That day, everyone was dancing and having a ball because of what Rick played.”
Rick and his band can read a crowd and pull out any popular melody, probably because they perform at venues around Los Angeles—not just at weddings. In fact, couples can often arrange to see the band rock out at one of their gigs before deciding to hire them. It’s a way to test-drive them, check out their stage persona and overall appeal. “Before we booked Rick, we went to see him in Beverly Hills,” a bride explains. “His presence at that show was perfect—he really understood the temperature of the room, and responded perfectly with his song selection and energy.”
