When fashion photographer Isabel Gomes met photojournalist Lawrence Gund, they soon realized they shared more than a passion for the celluloid image. As their relationship blossomed, they both grew dissatisfied with their respective fields. “We’ve always put our hearts and souls into our assignments, and we wanted to be involved in a more meaningful genre,” says Isabel. “With wedding photography, Lawrence and I capture memories that will be cherished for years to come.”

Though both photographers have solid technical training and experience—Isabel studied at Brooks Institute of Photography, and Lawrence’s Journalism degree from USC launched his career as a freelance photojournalist—it’s their aesthetic sense that sets them apart from others in their profession. “We collect fine art photos and draw inspiration from them,” Lawrence explains. “Isabel and I are especially influenced by the photographers from the 30s and 40s—there’s a wonderful classic elegance to the era.” To achieve the same timeless images, they tote around a variety of vintage equipment, such as a pinhole camera and an antique Agfa, and they also use infrared film. In the hands of such experts the resulting images are ethereal, romantic, and very flattering. This tremendously successful husband-and-wife team has been heralded by photo journal Rangefinder Magazine for “bringing a new approach to wedding photography.” And the photo industry has taken note, bestowing prestigious awards on their website, prints and albums.

Both Isabel and Lawrence are soft-spoken, well-mannered professionals who manage to melt into the scene as quiet but keen observers. “Usually whatever unfolds naturally is better than anything we could contrive,” Lawrence says modestly. One wedding professional credits their photos with showing “a great sensitivity to emotion, portraying each person in their essence.” Another affirms, “they are exceptional young artists, with a lot of passion for their work.” Isabel and Lawrence shoot each event together, offering the advantage of both male and female perspectives. With her background in fashion, Isabel is attentive to critical details such as the drape of tulle or the angle of a bouquet. Lawrence’s experience in photojournalism ensures that the story of the day will unfold like a photographic essay as a couple reviews their wedding album. A growing list of celebrities has discovered this talented pair, whose photos have appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as in galleries in L.A. and Ventura counties.

The artistry of Isabel and Lawrence extends to the creation of each wedding album, too. When a couple has selected the photos they want to include in their album, the photographers spend hours preparing a layout to suit their clients’ taste and personalities. “How the photographs are laid out and the media in which they are displayed are just as important as how they are shot,” Isabel explains. “We pride ourselves in putting in a lot time and effort after the wedding.” Whether it’s a specialized printing tone or a portfolio box a bride has seen in an art gallery, Isabel and Lawrence help their clients coordinate the details of the final presentation, so that the result is nothing short of a masterpiece.
