Steve Hoffmann’s nuanced approach to photographing weddings creates emotion-rich results. His pictures not only capture the main action, but are layered with meaning and feeling. For example, a shot of the bride getting dressed is complemented with other visual tidbits of what’s happening around her, such as a bridesmaid’s helping hands or the videographer leaning into the scene. By photographically expanding each moment of the day, Steve tells a more complete story.
To show the romance of a wedding, Steve uses his signature style. His images are almost never static; there’s a sense of life and movement in everything he shoots. For example, he might show a bride cascading down a curving marble staircase, her figure a gorgeous blur of white. Or he’ll catch the groom, just as he’s lifted his bride into a spinning embrace, their exuberance obvious in a swirl of dress against tuxedo. “He did inspired stuff but also managed to get the more formal family portraits,” says a bride. “He simply has an eye for what makes a beautiful shot.”
Steve believes that an unhurried atmosphere makes for the best images. He routinely comes early and stays late, adding a time cushion on either side of the ceremony and reception. His packages have no time restraints, and he works a full day for every client. It’s not uncommon for Steve to arrive when the bride is in her pajamas and stay until the guests have gone. This way, he’s able to hone in on particulars that other photographers might not even see. “Steve always gets the details happening around the bridal party,” says a makeup artist. “He takes care to get it all, which makes a difference in showing people from different perspectives.”
Steve thrives on the spontaneity of weddings. He loves the uncertainty of having to think fast with a camera in-hand. For him, it’s similar to a sporting event: the action only happens once, and the lighting can’t always be controlled. Adrenaline keeps him motivated, and he finds it all fun. “Steve has a good presence, even when the day gets crazy,” says a videographer. “He’s very mellow, knows how to go about things, and is never intrusive or bossy.”
When he’s shooting wedding pictures, Steve keeps the mood easy-going and enjoyable. He strikes a balance between being a complete pro behind the camera and a regular nice guy who you wouldn’t mind having around for, say, 9-plus hours on the big day. One very pleased bride summed it up this way: “I was nervous to get my photo taken in front of so many people, but as soon as I saw Steve, he made me feel relaxed. He didn’t have tons of equipment and he wasn’t hurrying us. He was very low-key. And let me tell you, they were some of the best images ever. They totally captured our personality and love.”
