One look at Derek Goes’ stunning wedding photography is enough to make anyone a fan. He has a way of bringing out clients’ star qualities. Maybe that’s because this business degree graduate, has done time on both sides of the camera. He has directed short films, photographed celebrities on the red carpet, and worked as an actor in commercials and soaps. All that experience has given him a comfort and ease with the tools of the trade. He’s a master at capturing fleeting moments on film.

“I like to keep things natural and fluid,” concedes Derek. “Of course I do all the traditional shots, but I really like catching the activity as it unfolds.” To achieve this Derek often uses movie techniques like tracking shots in which the camera travels—perhaps down the aisle with the bride and her father or around the dance floor for the couple’s first dance—to follow the action. Yet this is one cameraman who never gets in the way. Part of his art consists of being ever-present and yet completely unobtrusive. “I stay in touch with the people and the event, then fade back into invisibility,” he says. Derek credits his versatility to his equipment, but others claim it’s a skill that is part of his signature style. His use of light and shadow recall what is best in cinema and he has a knack, as does any good director, of coaxing the best out of his subjects, of making them forget that he’s there, and framing their responses to perfection.
“The reason we chose Derek, recalls a bride, “was because of his expertise in photojournalistic technique. His work was fantastic; he went above and beyond.”

I want people to look back at their photos and see the emotion, the love, that surrounded them on that day.” He manages to do that and more.
