About This Company
Bruce Garnitz and his band were playing recently at a wedding when the father of the bride asked for music that was very different from the newlyweds’ tastes. With just a few words to his band, Bruce folded the request into the repertoire, playing it a few moments later with an updated arrangement. Everybody was pleased. “It’s hard to stump my band,” Bruce remarks with justifiable pride.
For Garnitz, who has a reputation for fielding some of the best-prepared, quickest-thinking bands, emcees and entertainers on the Southland special event scene, the problem and the solution were old hat. Bruce finds out as much as he can about his clients beforehand, so he’s usually able to anticipate (and avoid) potential glitches. But even when he’s hit with something completely unforeseen, like the situation with the bride’s dad, he’s able to resolve it diplomatically.
“We always go into an event well-prepared,” promises Bruce. “That’s because my bands aren’t just put together for a one-night gig—they’re self-contained,’ with core units of four to nine players whose numbers can be expanded. They sound great coming out of the box because they’ve played together for a long time and are well rehearsed.” One entertainment vendor gives a thumbs-up to Bruce’s approach: “His musicians seem to have all the tunes in their heads. They are full-time players—some of them are studio musicians—so it’s not a weekend thing for them.”
Bruce originally studied jazz, arranging and composition, and later taught at the Berklee School of Music in Massachusetts. His musical range covers virtually every style of music that’s likely to be requested at a wedding or event. “We can play rock, Latin, jazz, hip-hop, classical, swing, Klezmer, even Chinese—you name it,” he says. “We even do polkas (which added just the right note to a recent client’s 60th birthday party in Milwaukee).”
Bruce’s musical range is matched by his geographical reach and the scope of his services. “We work all over North America, as well as in Hawaii and the Caribbean. In addition to musicians, we can procure name entertainers for an event and provide entertainment that ranges from circus acts, singers and comedians to magicians, casino parties and dancers.” Even his bands do more than just play music. “All of my bands have an emcee—a musician who’s good at hosting, maintaining the flow of an event, and keeping people in a good mood.”
Over the years, Bruce and his musicians have kept a lot of people in a good mood. Take, for instance, the countless audiences at award shows, where they’ve played the perfect music cues to introduce guests and celebrities. Or that evening when they entertained an entire GOP convention! But Bruce’s experiences dealing with high-profile events haven’t dampened his love for weddings. “We love playing weddings,” he says. “It doesn’t matter to us how many guests there are or where we play. What matters is exceeding the expectations of our clients. We play great music, keep the dance floor full, and control the volume to allow for comfortable conversation at the tables.”
For Bruce, musical versatility doesn’t mean much if the client feels left out. To make sure that doesn’t happen, he works with his wife, Ginger, to plan every event. “We deal directly with our clients, meeting face-to-face with each and every one,” he says. “Playing a wedding is such a personal thingwe never want to be just a voice on the phone or a form in the mail. I like to think we handle our clients like platinum.”
