About This Company
“Our work is about life,” says Bleu of Bleu Cotton Photography, Inc. “We all experience a roller coaster of ups and downs. People’s lives aren’t stagnant, and their weddings aren’t either—they’re filled with motion and every emotion.”
“Photographing the action of a wedding is our most important job,” explains Alison Pierce-Cotton, Bleu’s wife and partner. “Details tell the story—the wind blowing a bride’s veil, the split second when someone’s laughing or crying, a little trinket on the table’s edge. We use longer lenses so we can capture the special moments when people aren’t aware that they’re being photographed.”
Bleu and Alison possess different strengths, and together they make a dynamic team. “What’s so cool about them is that as a husband and wife, they work so well together—they really complement each other,” raves a groom who insisted on hiring Bleu Cotton Photography after meeting the couple. “All during our wedding, Bleu was a riot—our guests kept commenting on how fun he was. Alison is so great with the details and does wonderful candid work, while Bleu is especially talented with portraiture. I wanted a good combination of both and that’s exactly what they gave us.”
The duo came together in 1997, but each had previously logged years of experience behind a camera. Alison, inspired by her parents, grandfather and uncle—all professional photographers—began photo-documenting her life before she was old enough to tie her shoes. She had her first solo wedding job at the age of sixteen, when her parents were already booked. “From that point on, I was hooked,” she confesses. “It’s in my blood.”
“It is addictive,” agrees Bleu, who also developed an interest in photography at a young age. Influenced by the exotic images of National Geographic, he dreamt of traveling the world with camera in hand. Wedding photography was never part of the plan, but during college a friend convinced him to shoot a wedding and he changed his mind. “I got paid $100—just a little less than we charge now,” he laughs, “but I discovered how much I like the work. I’ve been in the profession for years, yet I still love interacting with new couples and families every weekend.” While Bleu and Alison work mostly in Southern California, they have been able to live out a little of his travel fantasy, photographing weddings in the Bahamas, Costa Rica and Peru.
Back in Costa Mesa, the smooth sounds of contemporary jazz fill their studio, located in the striking 1901 Newport Plaza Building. Here clients relax in a comfortable setting, with cozy couches and Bleu Cotton’s distinctive photography gracing the walls. And after they book, they’re invited back for an engagement photo session, shot against a backdrop of the property’s beautiful arches and landscaping. “It’s so important that we get to know a couple before the event,” stresses Bleu. “We need to be at ease with each other.” Putting people at ease isn’t a problem for the Cottons. One bride recounted, “We went in for an hour-long meeting, and three fun and informative hours later we left, knowing that Bleu Cotton Photography was the one for us.”
An officiant once referred to Alison and Bleu as “the sunshine of the wedding business.” Their warmth and upbeat attitude certainly touched one bride who said, “Having Bleu and Alison at your wedding is much more than having photographers there. They’re like your favorite guests—you can’t wait to see them.”
