"Weddings have always been a big part of Jon Barber’s life: as a kid, Jon was a ring bearer six times and his mom was a wedding coordinator, then a wedding photographer. And although he himself has been capturing the Big Day in photos for almost two decades, he swears he’s more into weddings than ever. "I still get butterflies before a shoot," he says with amazement. "I go to each wedding as if it’s a brand new experience."
While he maintains the fresh, open attitude of someone just starting out in the profession, Jon’s skills are rock solid. Before specializing in weddings, he honed his technique doing plenty of commercial and fashion photography. "With my background and experience, the technical aspects of photography are almost automatic," he says. "I can be far more creative in the moment; I don’t have to worry about the nuts and bolts."
The reason he ultimately decided to focus on photographing weddings was not just because he grew up with them. "I enjoy working with people in real-life situations, where taking pictures is a kind of shared communication," he explains. His style is photojournalistic and he prefers natural light, using locations that best complement his subjects. "Jon is the ultimate candid photographer," says a DJ, who refers to him reverently as ‘The King.’ "He has a fantastic eye and comes up with shots that could never be posed."
Jon’s profound respect for the singular character of each wedding and couple, combined with his considerable talent, have earned him quite a following. Although his offices are in Laguna Beach and Manhattan Beach, his work takes him around the world. In addition to the U.S., he’s shot weddings in Denmark, France, Germany, Canada, Mexico and Morocco and his photography has been featured in Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Town & Country, Inside Weddings, Bride’s Magazine, Modern Bride and more. But despite his popularity, Jon never puts himself at the center of things. He remains unassuming and down to earth and is always completely immersed in the act of witnessing and documenting the ritual. "I pay attention to the whole event, not just the photography," he says. Those who have worked with Jon find him completely professional and diplomatic. "He’s such a sweetheart—he’s my absolute favorite!" raves one coordinator. "He’s so much fun to be around, and he knows instinctively how to get the shots he wants. His clients are never disappointed."
In fact, he is known for exceeding expectations. One bride expressed the depth of her appreciation this way: "Not only are the pictures absolutely beautiful, I mean stunning, really stunning, but you have this talent that goes way beyond the beauty of your photos. You are just so brilliant on the day of, making people feel comfortable, fitting in, and not being one of those showy cameramen. I don’t know how you did it, but you were this supportive presence to me throughout the whole day. You’re just amazing!"
Jon regards his time behind the camera as part of a balanced lifestyle that includes surfing, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and family. "Doing a variety of things gives me a sense of satisfaction and happiness that shows up in my photographs," he says. "The other thing that has had a profound influence on my work is being a dad. Being close to my son has expanded my heart and my photography comes from that place. I don’t think I could get the kind of shots I take without a big heart."
