About This Company
A music lover since the age of five, and an avid music collector since his teens, it’s not surprising that Mark “Peace” Thomas went into the music business. With over 28,000 selections on CD and a wide network of professional contacts, Mark can provide the perfect music for your wedding, whether your tastes run to the Big Band era or cutting-edge modern rock.
Mark says he got into the field by accident, when he and his brother started working as DJs at high school dances. “People were surprised at the quality of our equipment and lighting even then. As people began to hear about us, our business grew.” Mark went on to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he studied acting and voice, and worked on various theatrical productions. “My training has really helped me in my current line of work,” he says. “I feel totally comfortable talking in front of large groups of people, and I’ve learned to think about the overall picture, not just one part of an event. I know how pacing can have a huge effect on the success of a party, and I can maintain the desired atmosphere at all times, whether it’s festive or low key.
When you hire Mark Thomas, you get a DJ, MC and a coordinator—all in one. Mark became a certified wedding consultant through the Independent Wedding Consultants of America (IWCA) in 2004. You have the choice of having an assistant coordinator, so that while Mark is in the booth concentrating on the music, the assistant is available to facilitate things with the bride and groom or with other vendors. As a founding member of the Professional Association of DJs, Mark has extensive connections in the field. “Although we have every type of music from every era, sometimes a client wants a particular musical focus, like Country Western or Caribbean. In that case, I may feel I’m not right for their party, so I’ll bring in another DJ who specializes in that type of music.” A photographer who’s seen Mark in action agrees: “He has an excellent repertoire of music, and he’ll get whatever is needed for a party, no matter how obscure it may be.” And Mark constantly meets with other DJs to discuss current trends, dances and technology so he can stay on top of new developments in the music industry. If you have nightmares about equipment breaking down and wedding guests standing around in funereal silence, Mark’s got that covered, too: “We’re fully insured, we always bring a complete backup system, and if our CD collection or equipment is stolen right before an event, we have access to whatever we need from the DJ Association.”
Though a DJ’s primary job is to play music, Awesome Entertainment does a lot more. A photographer who appreciates Mark’s ability to interact with an audience says, “He sure knows how to get people to dance—he’s just as good with a small Mexican wedding as a large society crowd.” Mark can teach the latest dances, and he’s always coming up with innovative entertainment options like “close-up” magicians, jazz quartets, improv actors and interactive games. “The Love Story” is another popular option to involve all guests. “We don’t want people tapping their feet, waiting around for things to happen,” he says. “We like to engage the audience, loosen them up and keep them entertained.”
Mark’s business philosophy is simple and foolproof: to suit his clients’ needs, and stay within their budget. “I really enjoy guiding people in choosing music that’s right for them. And I know I’ve done a good job when I see people from all age groups out on the dance floor having a great time.”
