Why We Like This Place
On June 20, 1894, 24 women gathered to organize the Woman’s Club of Palo Alto. Their goals were friendship, self-improvement, and community involvement. Within the first four years of the club’s existence, they founded the city’s first reading room and library, as well as its first elementary school and high school.
Their dream of having their own clubhouse, however, was not realized until 1916. After 12 years of fundraising, they built their Tudor-Craftsman-style “home” for $10,590. At the time, they worried that it was too far removed from the center of town, but its location in a quiet residential neighborhood has proved a felicitous one.
Weddings are held in the Ballroom, a simply designed space with grand proportions. On two sides, tall windows flood the room with light, which reflects off polished maple floors. Eight brass-and-glass fixtures suspended from the high ceiling, and dark wood wainscoting and trim throughout add period character. Have your ceremony on the stage, which is framed by a red velvet curtain and illuminated by footlights. A Steinway grand piano is available for musical accompaniment. Buffets are usually set up in the adjacent Fireside Room, aptly named for its tiled fireplace, and joined to the Ballroom by folding French doors.
The founders of the Woman’s Club of Palo Alto may not have envisioned their clubhouse as a setting for private events, but today the landmark building has become just that. Its elegant ballroom, Japanese garden and chef’s kitchen make it a popular and affordable spot for weddings, corporate functions, and other celebrations.
