Why We Like This Place

Nob Hill is one of the city’s premier addresses, and you can celebrate at the very top of the hill in an equally premier event venue. Clubby, intimate and estate-like, The University Club of San Francisco is a place where your guests can not only party, but also relax for days on end with the whole city virtually at their feet. Whatever the affair—wedding, birthday party, fundraiser or corporate gala—your entourage will feel right at home in the club’s members only-style environment.

Once inside the striking brick building, you might want to pause in the handsome wood-paneled lobby with its antiques, Oriental carpet and hardwood floors before taking the elevator upstairs to the third and fourth floors where the festivities unfold.

More elegant than ever after recent renovations, the fourth floor features a spacious lounge with huge picture windows that afford stunning views of some of the best parts of the skyline—including Coit Tower, Telegraph Hill and the TransAmerica Pyramid—as well as a game room, bar, boardroom, and library. Consider planning a ceremony, cocktail reception or dinner in the lounge, a small rehearsal dinner in the book-lined library (also a great sitting room for the bride and bridesmaids), and after-dinner drinks in the bar. Two small, old-fashioned phone compartments in the hall have Romeo and Juliet-style windows that open onto the carpeted stairwell, providing a super-romantic photo op. The boardroom, with its hidden wet bar, might be the perfect hideaway for the groom and his men.

Of course you could always have the ceremony and cocktails on the fourth floor and dinner on the third, where you’ll find more nicely appointed areas for entertaining such as the Main Dining Room, which has a built-in dance floor as well as chandeliers, a fireplace, and views that mirror the lounge’s upstairs. It opens onto the South Main Dining Room, which can provide extra space, be used on its own, or be combined with the ever-so-cozy Black Cat Bar.

It’s all so delectably inviting, your guests won’t want to depart…and they needn’t. Charming boutique hotel-style guest rooms and five queen suites offer all the comforts of home and then some, including a continental breakfast. Tuesday through Friday, lunch and dinner are also served up with panache by the club’s inimitable staff. Plus, the on-site fitness center gives guests additional space to unwind or wind up with a bracing match on the squash courts.

Family and friends can check in, check out the city and congregate in the club’s cozy corners to chat away about what a fabulous time they’re having and how brilliant you were to book your special event here.

Fees & Deposits

A deposit is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 2 weeks prior to the event. The site fee for a ceremony and reception is $5,000 for Saturday, Sunday or Monday. The site fee for reception only is $3,500 for Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Please inquire for special rates for corporate meetings, events, or Friday weddings. Catering menus start at $75/person. Tax, alcohol and a 21% service charge are additional, as is a $5/person fee for cakes or other desserts brought in from the outside.
