Why We Like This Place

Opened in 2006 with an expansion in 2012, this elegant three-story complex has the look of an opulent Tuscan villa thanks to sienna- and umber-colored buildings, a dazzling cedar loggia and a flagstone-faced porte-cochère. Yet The Meritage Resort and Spa is unlike any other venue in Northern California. With its innovative approach to luxury and epicurean delights, the resort may be the quintessential embodiment of the Wine Country lifestyle.

The buzz in Napa is all about The Meritage’s Estate Cave, a manmade marvel carved 128 feet into a hillside. Situated beneath The Meritage’s vineyards and gardens, the vast 22,000-square-foot cave is home to Spa Terra, the world’s only underground four-star spa. Lavished with natural stone and copper water features, this gently lit haven offers a long list of indulgences including nurturing couples’ treatments and bridal beauty services. The Estate Cave also boasts the Trinitas Cellars Tasting Room and a novel reception area that evokes the warm glow and dramatic ambiance of Old World Florentine wine caves.

The grounds of The Meritage Resort and Spa are equally alluring. Laced with walking paths, the hilltop’s lush landscape provides the perfect backdrop for slow, romantic strolls. Weddings take full advantage of the stunning scenery on the Vineyard Terrace, which overlooks nine acres of grapevines and a cabana-lined pool. Large ceremonies can be held on the Piazza, a sun-splashed courtyard. If you prefer an intimate indoor option, then tie the knot at one of Napa’s only private chapels, Our Lady of the Grapes. With a soaring wood-beamed ceiling and stained-glass windows that let in natural light, the chapel casts an ethereal radiance over the proceedings.

Receptions unfold in the Meritage Grand Salon or the Carneros Ballroom, the two largest ballrooms in Napa Valley (each divisible into up to 10 sections). With dark wood trim and imposing chandeliers decorated with stylized grapes, they have an appealing Italian flair. The ballrooms are bracketed by long loggias that bathe them in soft northern natural light, and prefunction areas that face out onto the resort’s inner courtyards. All of these adjoining spaces are lovely for mingling and wine tasting.

Superior hospitality and plush accommodations are other keys to The Meritage’s success. Many of the guest rooms have private balconies and vineyard views, and you can reserve a private wing of accommodations for the wedding party and family members. As the VIP couple, why not stay in one of nine sumptuous suites? They’re decked out with marble baths, granite counters and a chef’s kitchen where meals can be prepared and served just for the two of you.

Speaking of food, The Meritage’s award-winning restaurant, Siena, has a stellar wine list and Tuscan-influenced menus that are available for your event. Artfully incorporating ingredients from local organic farms, the rustic and naturally flavorful cuisine promises to be as inspiring as the setting. Guests can also sample a gourmet coffee or gelato at the resort’s Blend Café, and top off an evening in Crush Ultra Lounge with its six bowling lanes and upscale American cuisine.

Rental fees range $3,000–12,000 depending on season and space rented. Meals range $45–85/person. Tax, alcohol and a 21% service charge are additional.
