Why We Like This Place

Time has been good to the Lake Merritt Hotel. After three renovations in ten years, this classic 1927 Art Deco landmark is now filled with furnishings and accessories that enhance the building’s striking architectural features.

The décor includes plush axminster carpeting, the design of which was inspired by a vintage fabric containing both a geometric pattern and exotic flowers in chestnut, gold, red and green; walls painted in a rich terracotta color; wrought-iron chandeliers; overstuffed Art Deco furniture covered in jewel-tone mohair fabric; and Lloyd Loom wicker chairs and cocktail tables.

The restoration extends to The Terrace Room, the hotel’s restaurant and one of Oakland’s premier entertainment sites. Twenty-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows along the entire front of this grand space offer an enchanting panorama of Lake Merritt, Lakeside Park and the Oakland hills. During the day the multilevel restaurant is bathed in light. At night, it has an intimate, almost cabaret feeling, and the view of the lake is spectacular: The dark surface of the water perfectly reflects the glittering Necklace of Lights gracing its perimeter.

The Terrace Room features a semicircular hardwood dance floor, and a sizable mural along one wall depicting Lake Merritt as it appeared over 40 years ago. A shiny black grand piano and Art Deco fixtures are nice finishing touches. In addition to its great location along Lake Merritt, the hotel provides a wide range of services, many of which can be specifically tailored to your special event.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Terrace Room holds 160 standing and/or seated guests.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Terrace Room accommodates 200 seated or 350 standing guests.

MEETING CAPACITY: The Terrace Room holds 200 seated.

Fees & Deposits

A $1,500 nonrefundable security deposit is required to reserve your date. An estimated 50% payment is required 2 months prior and the balance is due 1 month prior to your event. Full seated service, including food and beverage, starts at $30/person. Tax and a 20% service charge are additional. Any menu can be customized.

Availability

For special events, year-round, Saturdays and Sundays 4pm–1am (call for details). Note that The Terrace Room and Lounge are also open to the public for dining: The Terrace Room hours are Monday–Friday, 11am–2pm for lunch and 5–8pm for dinner (9:30pm on Thursday and Friday). Additionally, The Terrace Room serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
