Why We Like This Place

Two years into a long engagement, Dottia Bilic pushed her fiancé for an answer: When were they going to get married? Tony, who was in the midst of building a restaurant from the ground up, asked her to wait until it was finished so they could have their wedding there, making it special. Well, she did wait, they did get married and “Tarragon” is indeed special.

This popular restaurant is located in downtown Sunnyvale on lively, historic Murphy Street. Even among the plethora of eating establishments here, Tarragon is a standout. Its earthy, soft peach façade and sun-dappled sidewalk dining area contribute to a welcoming entrance that beckons you inside.

Indoors, the chic décor creates a warm and inviting ambiance. To your right is a gorgeous inlaid wood bar, while to the left are curved leather booths trimmed with dark, rich wood set against a brick wall. Modern copper wall sconces and art-glass lamps cast a soft glow throughout the entire L-shaped room. But it’s towards the back where the magic happens—an open kitchen bustling with energy prepares a mouth-watering array of California-American dishes with gourmet flair. This is not frou-frou cuisine, but rather the kind of meal, beautifully presented, that you can heartily enjoy while savoring every bite. And for brides who think that the food is as important as the setting, Tarragon is an excellent choice.

You can host your cocktail and/or dinner reception in the restaurant itself (depending on day and time), or opt for the second-story Banquet Room. This private event space, which runs the full length of the building, has windows at one end and a wall of retractable glass doors at the other that open to a delightful terrace. Slate floors, a wraparound stone wall capped with flowering plants, and treetop views of Murphy Street make this sweet al fresco spot a charming ceremony site. It’s also perfect for hosting your cocktail hour.

Back inside, the Banquet Room is ideal for larger groups or can be sectioned off for more intimate parties. The part closest to the terrace has a high, angled ceiling, polished wood dance floor and framed French posters. In the center of the room is a stylish wooden bar, and on the opposite wall there’s a flat screen TV for playing home movies of the happy couple. A coffered ceiling, chandeliers of copper and glass, and textured walls in a peachy Tuscan tone complete the look of this expansive space. Of course, you can add any accoutrements you like, and Dottia and her staff will happily bring in a design and lighting team to help you realize your own unique backdrop. In fact, they pride themselves on going that extra mile with personalized service that includes customizing the menu to incorporate your favorite dishes—and even creating ethnic specialties if you desire.

The owners of Tarragon firmly believe that celebrating your marriage with great food in a romantic place is a recipe for success. It certainly worked for them!

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The patio holds 25 seated guests outdoors and the Banquet Room holds 200 seated indoors. A wall of sliding doors between them can be opened so that the indoor and outdoor spaces can be used in combination.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Banquet Room can accommodate 200 seated or 300 standing indoors.

MEETING CAPACITY: The site holds 175 guests seated classroom-style or theater-style.

Fees & Deposits

A $500 deposit is required to reserve your date and the balance is due 2 weeks prior to the event. Rental fees range $500–1,000 depending on the day of the event. Meals range $35–65/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
