Why We Like This Place
We know what you’re thinking: How appealing can a place be with the word “roadhouse” in its name? Well, in this case, very appealing indeed. Though this historic stone building and its five landscaped acres boast a slightly raffish past (it’s the site where Matt Tarpy was lynched for the murder of his neighbor in 1873), it’s now known for delicious food, eclectic atmosphere and an enticing array of both indoor and outdoor event spaces.
The most popular spot for a garden ceremony is on the Chapel Lawn, a velvety carpet of green surrounded by redwoods, pines and blossoming greenery. While guests look on from white chairs, couples say “I do” in front of an old-fashioned white gazebo. Continue to savor this scenic milieu during your cocktail hour, and invite your guests to meander onto an adjoining lawn, where a pond with a spouting fountain provides a mini-ecosystem for turtles and all sorts of fish.
For a quaint, intimate ceremony, who can resist the Monterey Stone Marriage Chapel? A picture window looks out to the garden, and whisper-pink walls, white-lace curtains and angel-themed décor lend an air of ethereal romance. Guest chairs are arranged facing a stone fireplace, whose mantel is embellished with candles, floral wreaths and garlands. Against this pretty backdrop, the bride and groom declare their love. During evening weddings, luminarias cast a dreamy glow over the charming tableau. The Chapel comes with a private changing room and sound system, as well as three on-site nondenominational ministers, should you choose to have one of them conduct your ceremony.
A sunset gathering or reception dinner lit by Craftsman-style lanterns and twinkling stars is nothing short of sensational in the courtyard. A vine-covered stone arch leads to an enchanting enclave with a honeysuckle-draped grotto and a stone-and-wood arbor laced with passionflower vines. The walls of the restaurant building rise on two sides, sporting more flowering vines, as well as a bronze frieze of dancing figures. Wooden tables and metal chairs are complemented by market umbrellas and heat lamps for all-weather comfort.
The restaurant itself has a variety of pleasing rooms for receptions and rehearsal dinners. In the Shell Room, soft cream walls and crisp white linens impart a relaxed elegance, while a fireplace constructed entirely of seashells provides a whimsical counterpoint. The Vintner’s Room displays award-winning local wines, contemporary art and views of the restaurant’s lush gardens. Upstairs, the Library is a spacious, private room with a large hearth, chandeliers and distinctive metal-and-leather chairs. Adjoining the Library is a private patio, where the bold hues of fuchsias and nasturtiums vie for attention. One side of the patio is a wall, ingeniously built into the hillside, with nooks and crannies abloom with flowers and aromatic herbs. A delightful mélange of textures, colors and scents, this terracotta-paved terrace is a lovely option for pre-dinner cocktails or post-dinner dancing.
Whatever your special occasion, Tarpy’s is sure to fill the bill. And don’t worry, you won’t find any shady characters drinking bathtub gin at this roadhouse—just delighted diners enjoying the congenial ambiance.
