We know what you're thinking: How appealing can a place be with the word "roadhouse" in its name? Well, in this case, very appealing indeed. Though this historic stone building and its five beautifully landscaped acres boast a colorful Old West past, it's now known for delicious food, an eclectic atmosphere, and an enchanting array of event spaces.
Guests enter the property beneath a large cut-stone archway, and stroll to Tarpy's truly original ceremony site: the Courtyard, an open-air plaza sheltered by high weathered stone walls laced with ferns, trees and climbing vines. Many a bride has peeked out the upstairs window that overlooks the Courtyard and experienced butterflies of excitement as she watched friends and family take their seats. Finally, she makes her grand entrance down an ivy-lined stone staircase brimming with vibrant geraniums, and across a petal-strewn aisle to meet her groom. Against this natural, rustic backdrop, the newlyweds share their first wedded kiss.
The cocktail hour (or indeed any sunset gathering) is nothing short of magical on the Library Patio, a terracotta-paved terrace where guests savor refreshments amidst a captivating mélange of textures, colors and scents. One of the patio's walls is ingeniously built into the hillside, with nooks abloom with flowers and aromatic herbs. Meanwhile, the bridal party explores the grounds' photogenic settings—and there are plenty to choose from. A velvety carpet of grass surrounded by redwoods, pines and blossoming greenery is a picturesque backdrop for group portraits, and couples can't resist the old-fashioned white gazebo and quaint wishing well. On another lawn, there's a scenic pond with a spraying fountain.
The restaurant itself boasts a variety of pleasing spaces for receptions and rehearsal dinners, and some can be used in combination. Two of the cozy indoor rooms adjoin the charming Front Porch, where wooden tables and metal chairs cluster beneath a stone-and-wood arbor laced with passionflower vines. In the Shell Room, soft cream walls and crisp white linens impart a relaxed elegance, while a fireplace constructed entirely of seashells provides a whimsical counterpoint. The Vintner's Room displays award-winning local wines, contemporary art and views of the lush gardens. Upstairs, the Library is a spacious, private room with an open-beam ceiling, country-style chandeliers and a welcoming hearth. Inevitably, as the night unfolds, the party spills back out onto the Library Patio for dancing.
