Why We Like This Place
Sugar Bowl Resort leads a double life. In the winter, thousands of skiers descend upon its well-groomed slopes, anxious to make the most of the ample snowfall. In summer, however, visitors discover a quiet, awe-inspiring, high-alpine resort that’s custom-made for an exclusive mountain wedding, retreat or family reunion.
Built in 1939 at the base of Mt. Disney, the original Lodge at Sugar Bowl is still the resort’s focal point and the site of most special events. When you host your celebration here, you have exclusive use of the entire venue, including bar, lounge, dining room, decks and lawn. You also get the 27 guest rooms, which are quite cozy—especially the spacious suite where the newlyweds usually spend their wedding night.
The Lodge’s décor is steeped in Old Tahoe charm with a European flair. A large stone fireplace and oak Craftsman-style furniture welcome you into the lounge, where creamy white board-and-batten walls are covered with vintage prints depicting Donner Summit’s rich history and storied past. Most rooms have a wall of windows overlooking scenic Mt. Disney.
While the lounge and dining room are often used for rehearsal dinners and indoor receptions, the Lodge’s expansive wooden deck is the standout site. Facing majestic mountains and a flower-studded hillside, it offers plenty of space for dining and dancing. It can also be partially covered with a white canopy or set with umbrella-shaded tables. Below the deck is a manicured lawn bordered by tall trees, a custom-built fire pit ringed by Adirondack chairs, and a gently flowing stream. It’s a lovely spot for exchanging vows and taking photos.
The secluded Lake Mary Cabin offers a different but equally stunning setting. Built at the water’s edge, the peaked cabin has its own generous deck facing a quintessential alpine vista of the sparkling lake and Mt. Disney. This is a wonderful place for a Friday night rehearsal dinner, an intimate ceremony on the adjacent lawn, or a relaxing afternoon spent on the private beach.
If you want to get married at Sugar Bowl but don’t plan to stay over, reserve the Judah Day Lodge, a large, contemporary venue featuring wraparound windows that provide mountain views from every table. You can tie the knot outside on the vast brick patio that runs along the front of the room, with the ever-present mountains as a backdrop.
And don’t miss the opportunity to invite your guests to the top of Mt. Disney for champagne and appetizers. As family and friends gather on the deck of the mountaintop station and take in the spectacular panoramas all around, they’ll be thanking you for bringing them to such a magical place.
It’s true, weddings simply shine here. Sugar Bowl’s natural assets, Old Tahoe charm and impeccable service impress everyone who visits, no matter what time of year.
