Why We Like This Place
Stinson Beach is one of the Bay Area’s natural treasures. This curving stretch of white sand extends three miles along Marin County’s Pacific coastline and has a visual advantage many other beaches lack: To reach it, you drive down a scenic mountain road whose views are often as dramatic as those along the French Riviera. But even better than Stinson Beach’s gratifying appearance is the little town that has grown up beside it: a quiet seaside community whose very existence is a restorative balm to almost any visitor’s hectic life.
This is a beautiful place for a wedding, and the best place to celebrate is at the Stinson Beach Community Center, a building that’s been at the heart of Stinson Beach’s civic life for decades. Located just off Shoreline Highway, up from the fire station and next door to Stinson Beach Community Church, the center looks like a small lodge. The exterior is finished with brown wood siding with white trim. Wood predominates inside, too: Three impressive trusses under a ceiling of pine rafters span the center’s large sunny interior, the walls have four-foot-high wainscoting, and the floors are Canadian maple hardwood. Delightful murals of sunlit clouds are painted on the east and west walls, adding a whimsical touch. Across the room from the entrance, the center’s focal point is a tall light-brick fireplace capped with a huge log mantel. On either side of it are large wood-trimmed windows and French doors.
The French doors open out to a patio enveloped by nature. A flower- and bush-lined fence runs along one side, separating it from a gurgling creek edged with fragrant cedars, mulberry trees and pines. While flowerbeds and potted plants adorn the patio, its most compelling visual attribute is a magnificent maple tree whose trunk has grown out horizontally. The trunk—easily 2.5 feet in diameter—runs parallel to the ground for about 20 feet, finally coming to rest on the pavement, where it extends three long branches 30 feet up into the air. It’s an impressive conversation piece, to say the least.
Some couples marry on nearby Stinson Beach, while others opt for a ceremony in the church next to the center. The church’s bright interior of light fir walls and pews soars to pointed arches, and the altar is backed by floor-to-ceiling glass. A mezzanine accommodates an organ and a choir. The church has an intimate feel inside and a small-town look outside, with its wooden siding and steeply angled roof culminating in a little belfry.
Stinson Beach has a best-of-both-worlds air about it. Although it’s only a 45-minute drive from San Francisco, it’s just far enough removed to possess an enticing away-from-it-all quality. And, it may be just the place to have a memorable, uncomplicated wedding day.
