Why We Like This Place
You can't help but have an "Ah, yes!" reaction when you step onto the campus of Kimball Hall and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, nestled into a shady hillside on lush Belvedere Island.
As you enter, you walk through a beautiful fountain courtyard bounded on one side by the hall and on the other by the church. Planted with Japanese maples, camellias, ferns and rhododendrons, it's an inviting and serene spot for mingling over cocktails or hosting an intimate al fresco ceremony or reception.
Most receptions and large events are held in Kimball Hall, a brilliantly designed space that makes you feel like you're inside an exquisite, light-splashed wooden box. The floors are simple blond wood, the walls are softwood in varying shades, and the gently curved ceiling is trimmed with eye-pleasing lattice. Natural light passes through the courtyard-facing glass wall as well as the windows that overlook Belvedere Lagoon, Tiburon and Angel Island, giving the airy room an inner glow. With such an artfully conceived interior, the venue can accommodate any color palette. The hall opens onto the courtyard, which can provide additional seating for large receptions or a quiet place for guests to relax during your celebration.
For a formal church ceremony, the sanctuary at St. Stephen's is ideal. The soaring concrete columns and walls of its gothic architecture suggest a sacred space and eloquently convey a powerful—even tangible—sense of the Divine. A heavenly blue ceiling crowns the long, high nave, and slender vertical bands of stained glass filter sunlight down onto the church's wooden altar. Hand-carved torchières holding votive candles line the aisle, softly lighting the way as the bride walks toward her groom. At the same time, music played on the massive pipe organ fills the building, long noted for its superb acoustics.
The hall, courtyard and church are a lovely combination of spaces that complement each other perfectly. From the pageantry and solemnity of the wedding ceremony to the festive dining and dancing that follow, everyone who celebrates with you here will remember the experience with pleasure.
