Why We Like This Place
It would take a pleasurable lifetime to discover all of the treasures hidden alongside Sonoma County’s country lanes—the tucked away redwood groves, the small farms growing heirloom vegetables, the quiet studios of hardworking artists. One of those gems is Sova Gardens, a wedding venue that combines the best of indoor and outdoor amenities. Although it’s located just yards off the highway to Sebastopol, you’d be hard pressed to spot it along the road. When you do find it, you’ll be pleased you did.
Sova’s wide lawns and rustic-style structures create a relaxed country feel. The first buildings that catch your eye are the water tower and the yellow-shingled, two-story 1906 farmhouse beside it. Faithfully and beautifully restored, the four-bedroom house—right next to the ceremony site—is a lovely backdrop for photos.
Sova’s long main facility and the place where most people enter the venue is called the Tavern Building. Converted from an early 20th-century chicken coop, it’s a combination banquet and reception hall, club, lounge and bar (featuring an early 1900s bar from the old Santa Rosa Hotel). With its many windows, hardwood floors, red curtains, goldenrod walls and dark furniture, the Tavern is both an excellent stand-alone indoor space for winter ceremonies, and a welcoming retreat where guests can mingle and rest on warm days. (The commercial kitchen here is like catnip to local caterers—all they have to bring is the food!)
An arbor festooned with small lights extends from one end of the Tavern Building and looks out over the smaller of the site’s two lawns as well as a grove of fragrant redwoods. Beyond, Sova’s 10,000-square-foot lawn seems to extend forever, sloping gently from the Tavern Building toward a line of ornamental trees and rose-garlanded wooden fences. The lawn is intensely green—almost emerald—and its spaciousness makes it easy for guests to circulate and socialize. A three-tiered fountain splashes at its exact center, and potted flowers and ornamental palms flank it almost everywhere. The view extends to distant pastures, farm buildings and houses, adding to the very bucolic ambiance.
Photographers love Sova. One great photo op is the waterwheel at the base of the tower. With its lush pond, filled with reeds and blooming plants, the site is like a grand wishing well. Other choice spots for photos are under the redwoods, next to a rose garden, by the centerpiece fountain, in a rustic barn or at the edge of the smaller lawn overlooking a dance pavilion. The pavilion, easily accessed by a ramp or stairway, is bounded by ornamental trees, and blooms including dazzling sunflowers and colorful vines.
Sova Gardens has an easygoing rural vibe, with all of the openness, informality and charm a bride might want as she imagines her perfect country wedding day.
