Why We Like This Place
The Sebastiani family has hosted many a winery wedding since 1904, when founder Samuele Sebastiani purchased the winery and began driving his horse and wagon around town to sell wine by the glass.
Now, after more than a century in the wine business, the Sebastianis have restored the winery’s original buildings, combining several of them to create new tasting and special event rooms. Pride and dedication to history are evident throughout the new facility: Century-old stone walls were uncovered, adding their amber and weathered-ivory patina to both the interior and exterior of the winery. Sebastiani’s heirloom wine equipment is featured prominently in the décor. Most notable is the famous hand-carved wine cask collection. Local winemaking scenes, various grape varietals and an array of birds have been chiseled into hundreds of antique redwood casks. They were carved by a friend of Samuele’s son, August, the second-generation family member to assume control of the winery. Currently at the helm is third-generation family member, Mary Ann Sebastiani Cuneo, the woman largely responsible for creating this fine new venue for Wine Country weddings.
In the piazza in front of the winery, there is a circular fountain pool. Italian cypress trees and a wisteria arbor surround the piazza, where wedding guests sip champagne while awaiting the jaunty arrival of bride and groom aboard Sebastiani’s antique trolley. (Although small weddings can be held here, most couples get married elsewhere and have their reception at Sebastiani.)
The festivities may continue inside the winery. The entrance is at the end of an arched and pillared portico that runs the length of the building’s stone façade. Punctuated by old Mission-style heavy wood and iron doors, the long portico serves as both a shaded promenade and an exceptional backdrop for wedding photos.
Inside, two rooms offer a cool respite from the summer sun. The Sonoma Room is a serene spot for an intimate ceremony or rehearsal dinner. Its focal point is a simple carved stone fireplace surrounded by a hand-painted mural of Sonoma’s city and countryside done in muted blues, greens and honey-golds.
The Barrel Room, where receptions take place, is dedicated to the fruit of the vine. Wine barrels standing ten feet tall line the thick stone walls, and the fragrance of aging wine permeates the air. Papa Barrel, as it is affectionately called, rises up two stories at the far end of the room. This cottage-sized barrel has a staircase that wraps around it from back to front. One couple made their grand entrance by winding down the stairs together, brilliantly lit up by a spotlight. They received a standing ovation from their guests.
Sonoma’s oldest continuously operating family winery, Sebastiani Vineyards is steeped in tradition. It’s a place where you and your guests can drink in the family’s rich history and enduring spirit along with some world-class wines.
