Why We Like This Place

Santa Cruz and its environs have long been renowned for spectacular scenery. Clusters of forested hillsides hug a shoreline that teems with marine life and rainbow-hued flora, and the favorite pastime of locals seems to be watching for that twilight moment when the setting sun kisses the blue surf. Santa Cruz’s quaint suburbs boast small-town charm aplenty, attracting artisans, tourists and nature-seekers by the thousands. Yet, like the monarch butterflies that flutter among the region’s many eucalyptus groves, Santa Cruz has undergone a transformation during the last decade or so, shedding its Bohemian persona in favor of a laid-back sophistication. You’ll want to take advantage of the area’s attributes for your special celebration, and one of the nicest spots to do this lies in the beachside village of Aptos.

From Highway 1, head shoreward into a quiet residential neighborhood tucked away in the coastal highlands. Here you’ll find the appropriately named Seascape Golf Club, perched on a bluff facing the Pacific. The cream-colored building has an arched colonnade running along the front, accented with flowering herbs and shrubs; a towering pine stands at one end, while a willow spills its languid boughs over the other, contributing to Seascape’s lush allure.

Seascape is known for its “Weddings on the Green,” ceremonies on the manicured grass of the 10th tee. To reach this magic spot from the parking lot, follow a flight of mariner-style stairs with ropes for banisters down to a delightful garden hollow. Landscaped slopes dotted with cheery surprises of color cradle a swath of lawn, ample enough for an enchanting ceremony for 240 guests. Set an archway, gazebo or columns just so, and your friends and family will enjoy a sweeping vista of the redwood-studded fairways. Then, while you newlyweds pose for scenic wedding photos, guests enjoy an open-air cocktail hour on an adjacent lawn, set up with umbrella-shaded tables.

For the dinner and dancing phase of your event, Seascape brings the party inside to the Monarch Room. This breezy, sun-washed space comes with a high ceiling and clerestory windows; ornate bronze chandeliers lend a dash of formality. The airy mood is enhanced by a neutral palette and a ribbon of windows that wraps around the room’s outer edge, embracing a view that extends over swaying treetops and gently rolling fairways. Those reluctant to forsake the outdoors simply walk out to the terrace where garden benches invite a quiet respite, the better to watch the stars illuminate the sky.

A short walkway connects the Monarch Room to the Clubhouse, another attractive space for smaller events (or as a foul-weather backup for the ceremony and cocktail hour). The Clubhouse’s natural wood ceiling and a cool-blue color scheme convey a relaxed-yet-refined quality. Windows frame the pretty golf course panorama, with the blue expanse of the Pacific just beyond. Set café tables and chairs on the Clubhouse’s adjoining terrace, and guests can delight in the salty tang of the sea air.

Also delightful are Seascape’s “package deals,” which let you mix and match your event options. Seascape even offers “A Little Tyke’s Reception,” which provides a party room, buffet and entertainment for the kids—all you bring is the babysitter.

Fees & Deposits

A nonrefundable deposit, which is applied to your food and beverage total, is required to reserve your date. The amount of the deposit is equal to 25% of the estimated event total. 50% is due 6 months prior, and 100% of the final estimated balance is due 10 days prior to the event date. Rental fees range $150–1,200 depending on space rented. Meals range $20–70/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
