In the early morning, a light mist veils the coast. Weathered redwood buildings float into view, hugged by deep green stands of cypress trees. Far below, the sea crashes against the rocks, and the rugged, serpentine coastline fades away into the fog. You blink, half expecting that when you open your eyes it will all disappear. But it doesn’t. And you begin to understand why so many people consider The Sea Ranch a magical place.
Perched high on a bluff, the Sea Ranch Lodge is part of a small community of individualists who cherish the soothing solitude of this North Coast haven. And for those who don’t have the luxury of living here permanently, the lodge provides a temporary getaway. It’s also a coveted location for a wedding.
Getting married outdoors here is an exhilarating experience. The short path down from the lodge that brings you to the two ceremony sites cuts through a meadow of golden grass bordered by wildflowers in purple, yellow and white. As you walk, you hear the surf pounding and smell the ocean’s scent in the air. Bihler Point is a breathtaking, secluded spot on the bluffs with a panoramic view of the ocean. However, there’s only standing room for 25 people; no chairs or other furniture are permitted. Most ceremonies take place on nearby Black Point Lawn, where you can tie the knot followed by cocktails next to a charmingly rustic 1890s barn that overlooks the shoreline extending for miles in both directions. For a spiritual touch at either site, have a bagpiper or flutist play a special melody.
If you’d rather have your celebration inside the lodge, the facility has two interconnecting spaces, each with redwood walls and ocean views. The two-level Fireside Room is perfect for a cozy reception, elopement, renewal of vows or rehearsal dinner. A large river rock fireplace dominates one wall, while art from the Spindrift Gallery is showcased on another. A huge picture window and a skylight let in natural light. The adjacent Solarium is an intimate atrium used for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and mingling. Completely enclosed by glass, it affords a floor-to-ceiling view of the meadows, ocean and sky.
Larger receptions are held in a festive party tent, which is set up near the guestrooms. Bordered by a high, weathered fence and fronted by greenery, it feels quite private. The spacious pole tent, included in one of Sea Ranch Lodge’s wedding packages, comes with a dance floor, oak bar, flooring, heat, sound, and more. Twinkling perimeter lights add sparkle at night, and you can customize the décor, too, with paper lanterns, crystal chandeliers, long farm tables, or whatever suits the style of your event.
The beauty of The Sea Ranch, aside from its abundant natural attributes, is that you and your guests can stay here long enough to really relax and enjoy it. Recently renovated with stylish contemporary appointments, guest rooms are uncluttered and comfortable; all have ocean views and most have fireplaces (but, to preserve the tranquility, none have televisions). Diversions include exploring the many beaches, hiking along miles of trails, and playing golf on The Sea Ranch’s links-style course. Black Point Grill serves all meals, which feature internationally inspired California cuisine with an emphasis on the freshest local ingredients.
Not getting married? Don’t let that stop you from coming to the Sea Ranch Lodge. The setting is just as uplifting for a romantic weekend, corporate retreat, or family reunion. Let’s face it, when the earth was created, some places ended up much more enchanting than others. This is one of them.
CEREMONY CAPACITY: The outdoor oceanfront ceremony site accommodates 2–125 guests. Indoors, the Fireside Room holds up to 50 seated guests, which makes it perfect for a small wedding, commitment ceremony, elopement or renewal of vows.
EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Fireside Room holds 72 seated and tented space can hold 73–125 seated guests.
MEETING CAPACITY: The Fireside Room holds 50 seated theater-style, 33 seated conference- or classroom-style.
To secure your date, a nonrefundable deposit of 50% of the anticipated event total is required, with guest room minimums based on the number of attendees. Site fees range $500–6,900 depending on the guest count. Catering menu starts at $75/person and wedding dinner packages, including food, wine and beverages, start at $149/person with upgrades and customizations available. Room rates run $209–379 based on double occupancy and include a full, prepared-to-order breakfast in the oceanview dining room. Selected dog-friendly rooms are available; there is a one-time charge of $50/pet with a limit of 2 pets per room.
