Why We Like This Place
On a quiet residential street near the crossroads of Big Basin and Sunnyvale/Saratoga Roads lies the Saratoga Foothill Club, a 1915 Arts and Crafts-style landmark. Designed by Julia Morgan as a women’s club, it houses the oldest social organization in Saratoga. With a brown-shingled façade, sloping roof and decorative windows, it’s one of the most distinguished small redwood structures in California: In 1978, the club received the distinction of being listed in the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
Equally noteworthy is the club’s adjoining paved courtyard, dubbed the neighborhood’s “Secret Garden.” The cozy enclave is dotted with Japanese maples, whose summer-to-autumn crimson foliage provides a burnished backdrop for wedding ceremonies. On one side, a long wooden arbor is adorned with mature wisteria vines whose graceful lavender blooms debut in early spring. Beneath the arbor, a bench formed by twisted branches is an eye-catching place to gather the bridal party for photographs. Lush Japanese privets hedge the courtyard, lending privacy and a peaceful vision of greenery to the scene.
The club’s interior further enhances the venue’s appeal. A formal redwood foyer ushers guests into a hall that’s ideal for a buffet reception or sit-down dining. The hardwood floor, half-timbered walls and 30-foot-high vaulted ceiling convey a quaint, chapel-like charm. (In fact, this room is sometimes used for ceremonies during the cooler months.) A bank of striking multipaned windows frames a view of the leafy courtyard, while just above, sunlight streams down from an elaborate circular window, setting the entire space aglow. The wedding cake looks picture-perfect in front of the windows, which highlight the newlyweds during the cake cutting. The room also has a raised platform stage that can hold musicians, a DJ, or even a decorated head table. Glass-transomed wooden doors open to an anteroom with a brick fireplace, a convenient spot to put a buffet table. Here and there authentic period fixtures—like rich wood paneling or eye-catching lamps—add vintage flair.
With its beautiful architectural details and overall feeling of comfort and warmth, the Saratoga Foothill Club offers a unique and intimate environment for celebrations.
