Why We Like This Place

The intersection of 101 and 92 is the true crossroads of the San Francisco Bay Area, linking east to west, north to south, and bay to coast. At that exact nexus, just minutes from San Francisco International Airport, sits the San Mateo Marriott.

Remodeled in 2007, the hotel’s exterior is topped with Spanish-style red-tile roofs, and the interior is decidedly contemporary. The circular marble-clad lobby and many of the lounges sport whimsical wrought-iron chandeliers and sconces with brightly colored, hand-blown glass shades. French doors everywhere open to patios, terraces and courtyards, and there are more windows than usual for such a large hotel, giving the venue a light and airy feel.

Stage your ceremony in the courtyard beneath the white-pillared gazebo with its decorative wrought-iron dome. Afterwards your guests can enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the nearby lobby lounge with its full bar and fireplace, while you take advantage of the beautiful courtyard for photographs. From here, make your grand entrance into the spacious Engage Ballroom for the reception. Wood molding, silky gold drapes and a fireplace framed in green stone tiles give this space an almost European flavor. During the day the room is flooded with light, flowing in through French doors.

More event options are available on the second floor. Have cocktails in the Synergy Lobby and your banquet in the Inspire Ballroom, which can be employed as one large space or partitioned for smaller celebrations. Off the grand foyer is the circular Synergy, with unusual, brick-lined walls and massive glass doors. Set the buffet and bar in the boardroom, and let your guests mingle in the foyer, or wander out onto the adjacent terrace for some fresh air.

Windows on both sides of the capacious Convene Ballroom are framed in pale gold drapes, and the room is lit with impressive alabaster and verdigris chandeliers. Invite your guests to sip champagne in the sconce-lit Convene Lobby to the sound of soft music played on the grand piano, before they move into the ballroom for the reception.

If there are many children on your guest list, consider offering them their own kid-friendly banquet in the adjacent Synergy 1, with a child-size (and child-safe) buffet of pizza, chicken tenders and other readily accepted kid fare.

San Mateo Marriott specializes in California cuisine, but the hotel will cater to any preference, be it pork and poi or roast beef and potatoes. They’ll handle all the details, from flowers to fire-eaters (really!), or you can plan your whole event yourself.

If your guests are coming from far and wide, San Mateo Marriott is in the single most convenient location possible. It can be reached easily from anywhere in the greater Bay Area, and there are enough luxury rooms and suites (476 to be precise) to accommodate the largest of weddings. There are even brand new bridal suites with lofted bedrooms, Jacuzzi tubs and full-length mirrors. Making everyone happy is a difficult goal to achieve, but San Mateo Marriott does it with ease.
