Why We Like This Place
With its façade of tall arched windows and imposing entryway, the San Jose Woman’s Club building makes a graceful impression. Completed in 1929, the Spanish-style structure has hosted a wide variety of events over the years, and many couples continue to be married here.
The foyer, with its fireplace niche and tiled stairway, is often used for small ceremonies; the stairs serve as both an entrance for the bride and a convenient spot for photos. It’s also a relaxed space for sipping champagne and mingling.
The Ballroom, however, is the building’s pièce de résistance. A high, slightly vaulted ceiling spans the enormous room, and light from a wall of tall arched windows brings out the shine on the maple floor. The floor itself is unusual in that it has a special “spring” construction to enhance dancing. Up above, the beams crisscrossing the ceiling are all hand-stenciled, and the ornate parchment-and-wrought-iron chandeliers glow amber when lit. You can exchange vows on the curtained stage, while your favorite tune is played on the Steinway baby grand piano.
The Ballroom has plenty of space for a large reception, but if you need additional seating, the adjacent Tea Room comes in very handy. Separated from the Ballroom by two sliding glass pocket doors, it has easy access to the kitchen via a pass-through counter at one end. Like the Ballroom, its pastel unadorned walls make a neutral backdrop for potted plants and flowers. The Club offers a great deal of flexibility, not only for weddings, but for private parties, seminars, concerts or lectures—and its fees are very affordable.
