Why We Like This Place
It’s always interesting to learn how something built for one purpose ends up being used in a completely different and unforeseen way. The San Francisco Film Centre is a perfect case in point: It occupies one of two attractive Mission-style structures originally designed to house enlisted men and officers stationed at the Presidio. Although the Centre’s building never fulfilled its function as a military residence, it has found another calling. In 1999, the Film Centre undertook a historic renovation of the elegantly appointed edifice, and today it’s a multi-use facility, providing a variety of resources to the film and media community.
You don’t have to be affiliated with the film or media industry, however, to have your event in the Palm Room, the Centre’s amazingly versatile event space. Fresh white walls and columns and honey-colored hardwood floors, polished to a mirror finish, give the room a natural sophistication. During the day sunlight streams in through attractively shaded multipaned windows, illuminating the room and making the floors gleam (subtle track lighting at night makes them shimmer). East and west windows provide views of the parade ground, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Presidio’s meticulously landscaped sylvan setting. On the eastern side, floor-to-ceiling French doors open onto a beautiful Mexican-tile veranda, distinguished by 13 graceful arches and wrought-iron railings. When the weather is warm (or with heaters), you can serve cocktails or dine outdoors.
We think the Palm Room is quite inviting, even if you do nothing at all to it. But with a little imagination, you can transform it in innovative ways. Wrap the columns with green garlands studded with flowers, or make a “hanging” photo album by putting favorite pictures around the room. Many partygivers take full advantage of the state-of-the-art lighting. One bride used copper and yellow uplights on walls and columns to pick up the colors in her floral centerpieces. For a corporate soirée, brown leather banquettes, round red carpets and red tablecloths were brought in to create a rich, clubby feeling. Red uplighting throughout gave the atmosphere just the right touch of sultriness.
The room’s excellent acoustics are great for DJs, bands and—as has been demonstrated by previous events—for anything from film screenings to interactive art installations. Twenty-four electrical outlets and internet connections at both ends of the room allow the Palm Room to go high tech.
Also part of the large property and available for rental are the pale yellow Conference Room and Spanish-style Boardroom. They offer breakout arrangements during business functions, or private quarters for bride, groom and attendants. Downstairs, a professionally equipped catering kitchen adds to the marvelous versatility of this venue. The intimate Screening Room, located downstairs as well, seats 24 in a combination of plush leather and comfy theater seating. You can imagine the creative party possibilities: a place to enjoy a pre-dinner film or screen that award-winning montage of the bride and groom from childhood to matrimony. Capture your memorable Palm Room celebration on tape, and it might just provide you with the perfect excuse to book a return engagement.
