Why We Like This Place
Even when sizzling midsummer heat sends the temperature in this golden corner of the Sierra foothills over 105, they’re still packing them in at this popular golf course and community hub on the outskirts of Auburn. It’s not hard to see why. Carved out of historic ranchland in 1999, the eighteen-hole course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., famed for his ability to maximize the beauty—and challenges—of any site. This one is all rolling hills, creeks, and majestic blue oaks presided over by an elegant clubhouse. The building—an artful sweep of stone and glass—melds seamlessly with the bluff it sits on. So alluring is the facility that the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association has made it a regular on its tour, while locals hold some 400 professional meetings here annually along with 100 weddings.
Couples getting married at Ridge will find a refined and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the largest facility from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. Wedding ceremonies begin at 5pm year-round, taking place outdoors from April to October—or whenever the weather is particularly nice. The bride and her attendants primp in The Library, outfitted with full-length mirrors and a rolling dress rack (champagne and hors d’oeuvres can be ordered), while the groom and his party enjoy their own staging area complete with poker table and games. The formal procession starts in the foyer, a soaring two-story room with a vaulted octagonal ceiling Stepping outside through two massive oak doors, the party advances to the Ceremony Circle, a stone-paved area where the couple says their vows under the canopy of a blue oak on a bluff above the greens. At sunset, geese often settle on a small nearby lake, adding to the site’s charm.
Afterwards, guests gather in the Clubhouse’s candlelit ballroom, or spill out onto the adjacent wraparound veranda (complete with heat lamps or misters) for drinks and appetizers while waiting for the newlyweds to reappear after photos. Or, the entire party might get together on the putting green below for a group shot.
The in-house events coordinator will help you plan key details of your reception, walking your wedding party through the rehearsal, and then ensuring everyone’s in the right place on the big day. And while the ballroom is ideal for large weddings, it can be divided into three sections for more intimate celebrations.
Once seated, your guests will be served world-class cuisine from a menu designed by Executive Chef Matthew Broucaret, who has led culinary teams at Yountville’s Bouchon and Zibibbo in Palo Alto. Since his move to Ridge in 2006, the chef has combed local farms for the best produce and freshest ingredients. Using European and Mediterranean influences, and a wedding menu tailored to your tastes, Broucaret seeks to inspire diners with each dish.
Guests with a yen to explore—before or after the festivities—can go wine tasting or travel to Lake Tahoe within an hour’s drive. Locally, they can track down Auburn’s old mine sites and rustic storefronts. In this most bucolic corner of Gold Rush country, natural beauty is everywhere, enhancing everything you do.
