Why We Like This Place
Something magical must have come over the army architects who designed the many fine structures that dot the Presidio of San Francisco. Instead of fashioning plain barracks or no-frills buildings for the enlisted men and officers, they constructed some of the most exciting examples of Mission-style architecture on California’s northern coast.
The Presidio’s Golden Gate Club—which once functioned as the Non-Commissioned Officers Club—is no exception. With its red-tiled roof, white stucco walls and arcaded courtyard, it’s the very picture of rich, Spanish-inspired design. Today, weddings and special events take place in this well-preserved 1940s-era club, and the sense of history and period details add real pizzazz to each celebration.
Nestled amongst towering cypress trees, the club’s white-and-red exterior pops in sharp contrast to the deep greens that surround it. As you approach, the wide-open courtyard of the U-shaped building reveals palm trees and a fancy, tropical tile-and-grass patio. When it’s set up with cocktail tables covered in bright linens, this area can accommodate a standing reception beautifully.
After the mingling and champagne sipping have concluded, guests drift past large white columns and through double-glass doors into the stately Ventana Room, undoubtedly the property’s most dazzling asset. A two-story wall of windows overlooks a grove of trees, and the bay shimmers in the distance. When you dress up this ballroom for dinner and dancing, that incredible view remains the focal point. Here, you’ll also find a cathedral ceiling, a sizable wood dance floor, and a huge fireplace at one end. As you look around and experience the warmth of this space and your closeness to nature, you feel an overwhelming sense of serenity.
If you want to split up the party or you need more room, the Hawthorn and Cypress rooms are at your disposal. They provide two more options for wedding ceremonies and cocktail receptions, as well as quiet areas for children to play and older guests to relax. They’re also ideal for hosting a dessert and/or espresso bar. Up on the second floor, there are breakout rooms for additional space and a small mezzanine that overlooks the Ventana Room.
It’s worth mentioning that two charming chapels are within walking distance of the Golden Gate Club. Saying “I do” at either one of them and then proceeding with all your guests over to the club is fun and exhilarating—plus you can take advantage of photo opportunities along the way.
Although it may be hard to imagine soldiers once partying in such an elegant place, it’s quite easy to picture your own festivities here. Whether you’re planning a wedding, an anniversary bash or another special event, consider yourself lucky that the Golden Gate Club has passed out of army hands and into the public domain, where you can fully appreciate its tranquil, sophisticated setting.
And when your fabulous wedding has ended, extend your stay through the weekend at the new Inn at the Presidio. Formerly the bachelor officers’ quarters, this historic 1903 Georgian Revival-style building has been remodeled into an upscale lodge. It features an inviting front porch with rocking chairs, a dining room, and an outdoor deck with a fire pit. From here you can enjoy everything the Presidio has to offer, including miles of hiking trails, wild open spaces and public and cultural events.
