Why We Like This Place
On a forested hillside overlooking the bay, this elegant Spanish Mission-style chapel is an inspirational place for a wedding. Appealing architecture and panoramic views are only part of what makes the Presidio Chapel so popular. Couples also value the venue’s convenient location, secluded setting and affordability. And unlike many houses of worship, here you’re welcome to use your own officiant, musicians and cultural style.
In fair weather, gather for pre-ceremony socializing in the memorial garden, a flower-lined tiled patio that faces the Presidio grounds and the bay. This is a wonderful spot for photos, thanks to a stunning backdrop of Angel and Alcatraz Islands framed by sweeping branches of pine and eucalyptus. Here guests await the peal of the church bell summoning them to the sanctuary for the ceremony. Inside the chapel, a soaring redwood-beamed ceiling hung with wrought-iron chandeliers, twelve arched stained-glass windows, and heavy oak doors all contribute to a strong Old World flavor.
Adjacent to the sanctuary, the Mural Room feels like a long, glass-enclosed sun porch. It looks out onto the garden and hillside, but its most notable feature is the mural from which it derives its name. Painted by the same artist who created the famed Coit Tower murals, it depicts St. Francis at its center—a fitting picture considering the variety of wildlife that lives around the chapel and the fact that St. Francis is the patron saint of San Francisco and animals. The room makes a tranquil spot for an intimate reception or post-wedding mingling, while the bride and groom have their photos taken in the picturesque memorial garden.
Couples who get married in the Presidio Chapel often have their reception at one of several other venues within the Presidio. Many newlyweds also stay the weekend at the new Inn at the Presidio, a historic 1903 Georgian Revival-style building that has been remodeled into an elegant lodge. It features an inviting front porch with rocking chairs, a dining room, and an outdoor deck with a fire pit. The inn makes a great home base for exploring everything the Presidio has to offer, including miles of hiking trails, wild open spaces and public and cultural events.
