Why We Like This Place
The Plumed Horse is all about incredible haute cuisine. And when you see its sophisticated new look, you’ll realize that the Plumed Horse is all about haute everything. A landmark in the quaint village of Saratoga for over 50 years, this upscale fine dining establishment has been called—with good reason—“the standard for destination restaurants.”
The most captivating element of its unique interior is the Wine Room, an architectural marvel that separates the lounge from the Main Dining Hall. Soaring 40 feet to a barrel ceiling, the room’s glass walls are lined with bottles and illuminated, allowing the round bases of the bottles to form their own glowing mosaic. Looking down affords an equally exciting view: the floor is transparent, revealing the main wine cellar plunging 40 feet below. What a way to showcase the Plumed Horse’s superb list of 1,800 different wines and champagnes!
Although any of the Plumed Horse’s dining rooms may be reserved separately, when you buy out the restaurant you get to fully experience the beauty and variety of its spaces. The most intriguing may be the Chef’s Table, a private room for 12 that provides a fun and fascinating way to celebrate a special occasion. As they dine, guests can observe all the action in the gleaming kitchen through a soundproof, floor-to-ceiling glass wall. A tour of the kitchen is included.
A private, vine-covered archway off Fourth Street takes you into the Oak Room, with its high ceiling and bright, airy atmosphere. During warm weather, the adjoining patio is also set up with tables, lending events a wonderful indoor-outdoor flow. Partygoers in the Oak Room enjoy one more special perk: a tour of the Wine Cellar.
The Lounge, graced by the softly glowing mosaic of the Wine Room, features a lofty half-barrel ceiling and a sweeping bar; a capacious gas fireplace brightens one end of the long room. Guests can settle into the stylish and comfy leather seating and listen to live piano music, or sit outside on the adjacent patio and watch the world go by.
Looking for a romantic nook? The Champagne Table, a curtained alcove for two with lovely stained-glass windows, is an ideal place to pop the question—or toast an anniversary.
But as appealing as the new Plumed Horse is, it really all comes back to the food. When we dined here, we discovered that the restaurant’s outstanding preparation of California-style cuisine relies on daring combinations of ingredients with perfectly balanced flavors and textures. A silky porcini mushroom soup contained delightful surprises in the form of slightly crisp fresh peaches and delicate slices of mushroom, with a foie gras and peach purée waiting at the bottom of the bowl to underscore the happy marriage of sweet and savory. The duck breast was perfectly prepared, luscious and tender. Even the fresh peach soufflé dessert came with a deliciously different twist: a scoop of olive oil ice cream.
The ambiance, the service and especially the food are why the Plumed Horse has such a stellar reputation. Whether you’re planning a rehearsal dinner, a wedding reception, a board meeting or any other occasion, their team of specialists will help you with all the details, from a customized menu and wine pairings to music and AV equipment. Restaurants that impress on every level are few and far between, and the Plumed Horse is one of them.
