Why We Like This Place

The fertile foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains have been sprouting boutique vineyards, and one of the most captivating is Pacific Oaks Vineyard Estate. Situated on 21 oak-studded acres above Monterey Bay, it’s planted with a Pinot Noir varietal that flourishes in the cool, foggy mornings. One day, friends of the owners realized that this lovely site was perfect for more than just growing grapes, and asked if they could have their wedding at Pacific Oaks. The result was so enchanting that word quickly spread, and before long other couples were sharing in this piece of paradise.

The secluded hillcrest location is far from the madding crowd, yet only three miles from Aptos Village. A local shuttle service chauffeurs you and your guests on a picturesque drive through the redwoods, past apple orchards and the occasional deer. Upon arrival, everyone is greeted by a front lawn studded with oak trees and wildflowers, a peaceful tableau that works equally well for pre-wedding gatherings and ceremonies au naturel. A cut-stone path becomes a wedding aisle, and a view of the vineyard with a slice of ocean in the distance adds to the irresistible appeal. The immediate scenery includes the tasteful yet unpretentious home, a breezy California interpretation of a Cape Cod, with plenty of multipaned windows, French doors and welcoming porches.

A footpath around one side takes you past the grapevines, whose tendrils look like delicate green embroidery embellishing the horizon. A broad sun porch on the left offers a prime vantage point for a double vista: a sweeping view of the ocean in one direction, and the vineyard and forested mountains in another. The sun porch, which adjoins the Bride’s Room, is a sweet spot for pre-wedding prep and also looks out over the vineyard and Monterey Bay beyond. A generous garden lawn that curves towards the bluff offers another ceremony option. Place an arch or chuppah at the edge, and say your vows against a lush, coastal panorama. Assorted decks and a patio with an outdoor kitchen are ready-made for a cocktail hour or reception.

Or give guests a change of scenery, and invite them into the Pool House. This amazing vaulted atrium structure is paneled with sweet-scented cedar and punctuated by five sets of double French doors. Guests love to mingle around the pool’s perimeter, sipping bubbly and enjoying the nostalgic, Gatsbyesque atmosphere. The pool can be functional, too: float candles and floral centerpieces in the water; or rent lifeguards and have a swim party for the kids. One more cool element: the glass atrium ceiling is retractable, so feel free to let the sunshine or moonlight in. After everyone has wined and dined, open the far doors of the Pool House to a spacious wood terrace that overlooks wooded hillsides and meadows. A built-in sound system makes the Terrace the place for dancing.

Judy Thibodeau is a warm and enthusiastic hostess, who has partnered with top wedding coordinators to ensure everything goes smoothly. They know how to capitalize on the estate’s many attributes—the views, versatility and touch of novelty—and make Pacific Oaks your own special world.
