Why We Like This Place
Gazing out the towering windows at the lush, rolling grounds, the lake with dancing fountains, and the sun-drenched patio area, you’d swear you’d landed at an exclusive country club. You’d be absolutely wrong. This lovely locale—the Orchard Pavilion at the Sunnyvale Community Center—is one of the most reasonably priced, yet visually appealing, venues in the South Bay.
The Pavilion is actually located in the complex’s new Senior Center, which opened its doors in July of 2003. But banish any visions of cramped, gloomy rooms full of endless bingo games. Instead, prepare to experience 32-foot ceilings, bleached parquet floors, and graceful curving architecture that affords sweeping views of the 11-acre gardens and grounds.
Accented by several extraordinary glass and bronze sculptures, the center’s design has already received several awards. Wander past the reception area and down a vast, whitewashed hallway that’s open to the second story, and you’ll find almost limitless options for events both large and small.
The centerpiece of the facility is undisputedly the Orchard Pavilion. An airy room of nearly 5,000 square feet, it can be used in its entirety or divided into three smaller spaces. Skylit cupolas top each section, allowing a natural brightness to wash over the light-colored floors and walls. All three sections also feature south-facing, floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open to the 4,000-square-foot patio and uninterrupted views of the lake and fountains just beyond.
Specifically designed with events in mind, the Pavilion comes with a separate service entrance that provides easy access to the industrial-sized kitchen, as well as unobtrusive deliveries to the banquet rooms. Behind a full-length curtain on one wall is a raised stage area that’s perfect for either the band or the wedding party.
Couples who prefer to say their vows in the open air often choose the patio for the ceremony. Afterwards, everyone drifts inside for the reception and dancing, or the entire event can be staged al fresco. Low-slung granite seats along the patio’s border invite guests to relax and enjoy the meticulously groomed gardens, which are adorned with flowers year-round.
If you have a more intimate event in mind, the Center’s Oak Lounge is ideally suited with its dark-oak floors, comfy leather couches and chairs, and scattering of tables that encourage conversation. You might also use this space for a pre-ceremony cocktail party or the receiving line.
The Community Center houses still more alternatives for the cost-conscious. A ballroom in an adjoining building has a dark wood parquet floor and ample space for dining and dancing. With its floor-to-ceiling windows and a pass-through bar revealing a patio bedecked with clay tubs full of flowers, the room encourages guests to stroll outside and take in the views. Here, a small pond with cubist-style concrete fountains makes the perfect backdrop for a sunlit ceremony.
There’s no shortage of smaller rooms that may be used as the bridal party’s changing spaces, for gift display, or anything else your wedding requires. One visit and you’ll agree: This stunning facility is much more “Ritz” than Rec Center.
