Why We Like This Place
The hum of passing cable cars adds just the right touch of romance to the ambiance at the Omni San Francisco Hotel, located in San Francisco at the foot of ever-fashionable Nob Hill. Movie-set perfect, this opulent venue is the result of a painstaking restoration of the old Financial Center Building, one of the city’s architectural icons. Completed in 2002 and recently renovated, this 362-room luxury hotel recaptures the bygone grace and Florentine Renaissance style of its illustrious 1926 predecessor.
The elegance of old money still wreaths the interior where the two-story atrium lobby combines the well-upholstered intimacy of a private club and the glamour of a grand salon. Bronzed washed torchères, dark cherrywood and mahogany accents, deep brown Italian marble, dreamy jazz and the scent of exotic blooms ease guests into a world of refined sophistication.
From the lobby, a dramatic grand staircase winds up to a broad wrought-iron-balconied mezzanine just made for receptions. From this airy perch, guests can look out through 20-foot windows curtained by the cascade of Czechoslovakian crystal that twinkles in the lobby’s chandeliers. On the same floor, the Union Square Room offers hush-hush views of the corner of California and Montgomery through its seven arched, draped and betasseled windows. The portrait-friendly lighting and intimate dimensions of this setting make it ideal for everything from rehearsal dinners to brunches to well-arranged seminars. The North Beach Room next door, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and Italian pastoral feel, is another fine choice for smaller functions.
For large parties, guests ascend to the third floor. Here the plushly carpeted and appointed foyer hints at the glamour of a vast Grand Ballroom, outfitted in the rich patterns and tasteful gold tones of the Florentine Renaissance. Lit with chandeliers and wall sconces and paneled in silk, its 2,800 square feet can easily accommodate the most extravagant affair. On the same floor, a terrace (cut into the heart of the building and shielded by the fortress-like walls of the hotel) allows guests to mingle outdoors, free from the wind and fog that bedevil most outdoor events in the city.
When the band has played its last tune, out-of-town and local visitors alike may find it hard to abandon all of this sophistication and style. Not a problem. They can book into recently renovated guest rooms that feature damask wall coverings, polished brass, Italian marble, Chinese granite, plush terry robes, down duvets and other upscale amenities. And should they want to step out, Chinatown, North Beach, Union Square and the Embarcadero are among the many San Francisco treats to be found mere minutes away.
