Why We Like This Place

A quaint, artsy Main Street…miles of shoreside trails and nature habitats…world-class golf, surfing and fishing…. As if there wasn’t enough to love about Half Moon Bay, we’ve discovered another compelling reason to celebrate in this secluded oasis: Oceano Hotel and Spa. Conceived as a cutting-edge model of environmental sensitivity, Oceano is not only one of the greenest hotels in California, it’s also one of the most inviting.

First off, consider the location, just a few minutes north of town center overlooking Pillar Point Harbor. Sailboats bob and sway in the marina, dolphins cavort beyond the breakers, and in the distance the Santa Cruz coastline is etched along a watery-blue panorama. The hotel lobby’s creamy marble elegance is equally uplifting, and the Great Room just beyond the foyer has all the charm of a luxurious, sun-washed beach house. Three stories of guest rooms encircle this cozy yet airy space, bathed in a natural light from its vaulted atrium ceiling. The magic of the sea whispers at Oceano: A replica of a schooner sits atop a grand fireplace mantle, and overstuffed sofas surround a whimsical glass coffee table that encases starfish, seashells and coastal mementos in a bed of sand. The entire boutique hotel is peppered with such well-chosen decorative details, all of which maintain the seaside motif.

You and your event guests will also be delighted by your spacious accommodations. High ceilings, fireplaces and plantation-style furniture make you want to move right in. Thoughtful amenities like Aveda bath products, super-soft towels and organic bamboo sheets seduce you with plush comfort. Step out to your oceanview balcony and experience Half Moon Bay’s dual personality: On an easy, breezy afternoon, sunlight glistens on the waves and brown pelicans dive for their dinner; then in an instant, curls of mist roll in with the setting sun and the bellow of foghorns adds a romantic mystique.

Speaking of romance, ceremonies are utterly picturesque out on the Wedding Garden, a sweep of landscaped lawn facing the harbor. A stone pathway leads to a white gazebo where you can exchange vows. Afterwards, serve cocktails on the adjoining Cypress Courtyard before retiring to the ballroom for the reception.

This beautiful new banquet space is embellished with ornate crown molding, Art Deco wall sconces and a trio of crystal chandeliers. The soothing neutral palette—soft gold, vanilla and a touch of sea-green—lends an upscale ambiance to your wedding dinner. (Incidentally, Oceano has superb cuisine, and their knowledgeable and experienced Executive Chef will sit down with you to design your menu.) When it’s time for dancing, five sets of double doors swing open to the Atrium, a stylish annex aglow in moonlight from a skylit ceiling.

Though Half Moon Bay has plenty of diversions, your guests really don’t need to leave Oceano at all. There’s an on-site spa offering indulgent treatments, and the hotel’s shopping promenade, Harbor Village, features select boutiques, cafés and galleries—all with colorful façades reminiscent of a Nantucket village. The enclosed promenade, which is flooded with natural light thanks to a greenhouse roof, is a great place for a stroll year-round and it’s also available for events.

Perhaps the most endearing aspect of this sea-inspired sanctuary is its warm and enthusiastic service: The staff is genuinely eager to help you realize your own personal wedding vision. In short, Oceano is a real class act.
