Mission Blue Center

Why We Like This Place

Brisbane is like the librarian in romantic comedies whose beauty—until the doofus leading man finally figures out to take off her glasses and undo her hair—remains unseen. It’s hidden away in a nook of Mt. San Bruno and isolated by wetlands from the tens of thousands of commuters who pass by it daily on Highway 101.

But those who leave the freeway and do some exploring will find an unspoiled little town that climbs up its hill like an Italian fishing village. Brisbane has its share of wealth, but it has yet to be yuppified or see its main street turned into a stretch of chain stores. You sense right away that this is a tight-knit place that knows it has a good thing going. Part of that good thing is Mission Blue, the community center the town built in 2000. It has everything a building of its type should have, including appealing architecture, a great hillside location with a fine view, and the ability to seamlessly accommodate a wedding and reception. There’s a poetic touch, too: Mission Blue is named after a rare butterfly whose preservation inspired the saving of open space on Mt. San Bruno, the imposing palomino-colored ridge that dominates the view from the center’s terrace.

Mission Blue’s main entrance takes you to a soaring glass-walled foyer that’s often used for a post-ceremony champagne reception. It opens into the spacious room at the center’s heart, cleverly designed with visual cues that separate it into two distinct areas. The first half of the room, with its hardwood floor and light-colored walls, is perfect for an indoor ceremony or dancing. The second half, carpeted and tiled, and painted a slightly darker color, is ideal for dining. The two areas can be partitioned or used in combination, and are easily accessed from the nearby full-service kitchen.

Glass doors lead from the interior to a beautifully fashioned, stone-finished terrace that runs the length of Mission Blue’s west and north sides. It sweeps out from the building toward a well-kept lawn that many couples have used to recite their vows. Standing on the terrace, you can look across a valley to Mt. San Bruno, and south to a view of Brisbane’s little houses clambering up the hill. There are fine design touches everywhere, including a wooden pergola at one end of the lawn and a colonnade along the terrace whose eye-catching beams and supports call to mind the sophisticated carpentry of a Chinese temple. Planters and flowerbeds abound, and the simple black railing that stands between the lawn and the hillside is sculptural in form. Even Mission Blue’s exterior colors have a sensual appeal—the olive green, creamy white and light chocolate tones give it an almost luscious appearance.

This site’s architects certainly understood how to create a welcoming place: Mission Blue is a harmonious interplay between space and light, colors and materials, indoors and outdoors. But when you have your celebration here, you won’t be thinking about how all the elements work so well together—you’ll just be having a great time.
